Description Ah, my beloved Stephen! Comedic genius and blooming director. If you don't know who he is, for God's sake, do a Google search!! And then watch a bunch of his movies! This particular shot was taken from Kung Fu Hustle.

I've actually been trying to draw him for *years* now and he has always defied me. But this time, I think I got him... or pretty danged close. There are flaws, of course, and lots of erasing as you can see from the nimbus around his head, but all in all, not too bad.

Sepia version in the scraps. It looks pretty nice, I think.

your style is so amazing. his eyes are so perfectly glossy. amazing! Everything is so perfectly placed, just as though it were a real picture. i love it. I don't even see a little nimbus-like erasing cloud, so I couldn't even tell that there was any erasing! heehee. This picture is absolutely stunning and I just cannot stop staring at it! Beautiful job with the shading; I am so jealous!

OMG! I ADORE the expression! Great work on the facial features and hair!

Was this originally so lacking in contrast? It could use a bit more definition.

Well, I have spent over an hour trying to find the original picture so you could tell me if the original was or not... but I can't find it. tell ya what, I'll upload my ref to my scraps and then you can tell me. Overall, I like the way it came out (I think that's because none of my earlier attempts works at ALL) but he's still too... I dunno, the head shape is still wrong in mine, I think. Anyway, lemme know what you think when you look at the original. Thanks!

Hum... Seems to me you made his jaw wider than in the photo, plus he's got more hair in your pic. But, if you ask me, that's only made him more handsome

Thanks, sweetie! A few months after I draw these things, if I go back, I can see EVERY mistake I could not see when I drew it. Now I look back and think I did him completely wrong and he barely resembles the original. *sigh* I mean, I like the pic, but he's all wrong. Live and learn, I suppose. *HUGS*

The texture of this makes me things of noodles for some reason....You can say it i'm a freak. I can't say i've seen any of his works, I'm not a big asain filmer. But it does look good. I really like the light on the right side of his face....with it being that bright, I woudl thin the tip of the nose would also have a pretty decent glint onit as well.....but I can't shade any better than an mule so don't take my word for it XD!

I can upload the ref pic if you like, but I tried to make it as close to the original source as I could. take into account there may be things off screen that effect the lighting, as the shot IS pretty tight and taken from real conditions.
However, I DO also know that just because it 'was like that' in the pic doesn't mean I shouldn't treat it differently to look right in the drawing.

And you should give Stephen a chance... he has a lot of Western influence in his style, so it's not as 'weird' as a lot of Asian humor seems to be to us -you'll get more of his jokes than the standard fare.

Wow!
Really great work!
Love the way you've shaded, and the lighting is beautiful. Especially like the way you've done the eyes, with those highligts.

Ooooh have you seen Shaolin Soccer?? I like that one better actually (tho you'd recognize some actors crossing over the two movies)... better movement through the storyline. Stephen has some great movies; Forbidden City Cop, God Of Cookery, Love on Delivery, the Fight Back to School trilogy, even the God of Gamblers trilogy... Magnificent Scoundrels and Tricky Brains (or was it Tricky masters? The one with Andy Lau) to name a few. See ANY of those. Very good stuff!

Thank you dear! he's a toughie...

I love the shading but his clothes don't look as heavily shaded as his face. >.< It doesn't look consistant. But that's rather minor, and other than that, it's oozing with skill. *goes off to cry in shame that she critisized this magnificint work*

chalyss In reply to King-Of-Destruction [2005-11-07 20:29:33 +0000 UTC]

*LOL* That's because I generally don't pay much attention to the clothing. He's lucky I did as much as I did. Heh. This is why I did not succeed as a comic book artist-- I hate the BG stuff and in a portrait, the clothes are BG stuff.

However, I have started to pay a LITTLE more attention to the clothes, hence why I even bothered with as much as I did on his, but I concentrate on the face and hair more. Just one of my quirks. Thanks for the comments!! One of these days, I'll focus on clothes too. *grins*
