Sparkyyy's February 19th Speed-paint Landscape Challenge [link]Kill this with fire!
So I dont even know where to start... thought this was going to be a blast but I kept feeling anger! I just couldn't get the foreground leaves/foliage to do what I wanted. only thing I like maybe is the clouds. I normally do my speed paints in the morning, but wanted to do this one with Bahkana so we did it right before bed. Wonder if that had an effect of my patients with this. Interesting image and a lot of challenges. I'm really realizing my biggest weakness is leaves and foliage.
so much hate for youuuu leaves! >_<
gumeh... on to the next challenge.

This looks great, in my opinion! Even though you're not entirely happy with the leaves, I still think you managed to give them enough texture and shape. For some reason, my favorite part of your speed paint are those lone branches on the right side with the red leaves. I also love how you did the sky/clouds, and the mountain. It looks amazing! Great work! ^^

XD those branches was the fastest thing I did in this image. After the last one, I have little fear of them now. :3 and thanks, this was really a tricky one. I kinda wish we had more time, I really just wanted to keep rendering with this one. I guess though I'd still be working on it.

I think you did a really nice job, you got the depth and the impression of the leaves nicely, also lots of little details which is nice. I'm only half hour into this at the moment but I cannot work out how I'm going to do a ddecent job of those leaves, getting a few ideas looking at yours though.

XD ty Vimes ^^ The leaves part in this was supper hard! I cussed at them the entire time! Spending about 1hr on them and I still didn't like how they turned out. I kept on layering and layering them with color and different brush strokes. T_T In the end I think its more messy patch of convoluted shapes rather then looking like leaves.

Yeah I think the only way is to do them as big shapes and add details over the top, if you put too much texture in it will look horrible, plus it wont be very artistic as you aren't supposed to include every tiny detail, as humans we nevi focus on the whole of something at once. So we wouldn't see every single leaf in sharp detail like the photo does.

yeah I think thats part of my problem, I kinda want to get all the little details in but have to remember its not really about that in speed painting. XD

That's what I like about speed paintings though, I don't want to see some perfect rendered rendition of the photo, I want to see the technique and the brushstrokes and a bit of style. Good thing is you don't have enough time to do everything as accurately as possible so inevitably some of your technique is always on show
