Description For today's offering, we return to the theme of Western Region named class 47s. No. 47078 Sir Daniel Gooch ticks over with a classmate on Old Oak Common Depot in September 1974. Sir Daniel started life as D1663 in early 1965, in the glorious two-tone green which was the original livery for these locomotives.

In 1985, she was selected as one of the 'Great Western 150' celebrity locomotives and emerged in lined GWR Green with brass name and number plates with a change of number to 47628. Her celebrity status was not sufficient to save her from the scrapyard, however. After a change of livery to British Rail Inter City, removal of nameplates, and a further transfer to Rail Express Systems (RES), this class 47 was unceremoniously cut up in Rotherham in 2006.

Magnificent shot Andrew!

Wasn't everywhere a disgraceful untidy mess back then!

At least the rolling stock was more interesting back then, no dirt doesn't chase the cows away lol. Like good old Fred once said "everything I like in life is ether heavy, dirty or dangerous."

Indeed! But I bet you never did this what I'm about to say. When Fred was a lad he use to climb up on the iron girders of a railway viaduct, not far from where he lived with his parents. And every time a locomotive came along usually carrying 40 wagons of coal, the whole thing would shake about and Fred would have had to hold on tight, so he didn't fall off the bloody thing lol
