Description
This is Truro Yard, Cornwall, on a very grey and grim July 31, 1974. Today the railway is a highly regulated organisation but, in those far-off days, with no-one in authority about, a driver might invite you into the cab for a free trip.

On this occasion, British Rail class 47 No. 47085 Mammoth had come in with the 'Return Bristol Goods' and the driver, seeing my interest, invited me to join him for a spot of shunting to see how it was done.

Although Mammoth should perhaps be my favourite class 47, I don't remember seeing very much of her. She was evidently a rather shy pachyderm. An Old Oak Common (London) engine, there is no reason why she shouldn't have turned up regularly in the South West.
