I have a degree in Illustration from RISD (Rhode Island School of Design)
Mixing mediums is fun...usually I tailor the medium I use based on what mood I want to portray in someone. Jimi was over the top in his costumes and color, so I could never do him in B&W!
I'd be happy to give advice
I am pretty new to mixing mediums...the reason I want to do it is to add effects, textures and layers of meaning in ways I can't do with just one medium. So I experiment alot...and of course not all of them are great. Sometimes you learn what NOT to do, hehe.

Very effective! I look at this and think its digital because of the sheer detail and clarity, especially in the background and stars. Then I remind myself that it is a traditional art, and Acrylic and pastel at that, and I'm overwhelmed! I love the raw quality of the colours and areas of the figure, but it is still incredibly realistic. Most of all I love the textures you give the faces in the portraits - that combination of bulky paint for shape, and the light crosshatching-like quality.

I do really like using pastel over the acrylic, the different textures it creates...but pastel is tricky...I often have o re-draw it 2 or 3 times (the pastel lines) because the fixative needed often turns soft pastel transparent. Oil pastels do not have the same stroke, though it is an alternative.
I think I used gold marker in this one, too, for his jacket detailing...
I'll use anything that works!!
