Description A few years ago i did a paper cut inkblot .... thing fav.me/d1fhx7k
I was planing on revisiting it for one of DAs contests, but never got chance (i went on holiday instead ).
So instead i took the idea and turned it into a more symmetrical design, as i hadn't done any since my last lot of bookmarks.

This is about A3 in size, hence the photos and not scans. I painted the paper in Liquid watercolour before starting the cutting.

I never timed it ... And I dread to think XP I do remember that it once I'd finished cutting I didn't like it and ended up reducing its size and changeling it's shape. Basically cutting away about 8 hours or so of work. It hurt, but it needed to be done. Wish I had taken a picture of it before tho.

Wow. I don't feel qualified to give a critique about your work as I know so little about this medium but would like to share what I feel from a layman's perspective. To that end I would say that it appears at the center line of this work that I see faces emerging in various poses to whit the center most face appears pensive and in thought while a winged heart symbolizing love/hope/inspiration/dreams? bursts forth from his brow and takes flight. The center "splash" looks to be in the shape of feathers/wings spread as if to take flight. The darker colors with the beastly face fading to light color with an evolved species look seems to suggest the hope and inspiration that can spring forth from even our darker more basic nature. As to the actual cutting, this looks like a LOT of delicate time consuming back breaking work There are a lot of what I think of as delicate parts as there is only small portions of paper supporting the weight of a larger area. This piece to me seems very dramatic. As the central figures almost seem to leap out at you in a thought provoking way. I could see this work in a light box curved slightly as if around a large pillar, the resulting shadows contributing to this piece as much as the swirling shades of blue to the overall mood and feel of this piece. I could almost think this has a comic book villain turned hero for love of someone feel to it. Feel free to hide my comment as I am sure I am just rambling at this point lol

Sorry its taken a little while to get back to you, been stupid busy!

Then I created this cut I started with a very very loose outline. Literally one that just placed where I wanted the image to stop. No detail, no planning. This is the way with a lot of my paper cuts. Considering that its very interesting to hear what you seen in my work.
For me I simply sat down and cut until it looked good, and much of that was done with the art folded in half, so I was never seeing the full image while working on it. For me it was simply an exercise in cutting paper on a larger scale.

What you have done is something that all art critics do. Look at some art and put some meaning to it, wether to explain it to yourself, or express how it makes you feel. Regardless of its origanal intent.
Personally I love this, art should challenge the viewer to explore how they feel about the work. It doesn't matter that to me this was half experiment half just something to do. Because others find meening in it more then I ever did or probably will.

Hope it doesn't bother you to find out that there is no depth in the creation of this work, but sometimes that's just the way it is. Some art has meaning, some art is just pretty and fun to make.
Thanks for your message, and again, sorry it took a while to reply xx

Lol. It definitely doesn't bother me to hear that you went with the flow. What meaning we find in art is much like cloud watching since both are hard pressed for two people to see the same things. Seriously though, if that art were mine I'd attach it to a clear plastic sheet and bow it around a light source cause I think the resulting shadows would be AMAZING

I do use laser and cameo cutters on occasion, but the majority of my work is done by hand with a scalpel. This one I hand cut. X

Here's a piece that only a lot of time and a lot of patience can do it justice. I think this "ink blot" idea is brilliant! And the size helps to bring out the sheer magnitude of this project as well... there's no mincing with size here. "Go big or go home!"

I like your designs with these bilaterally symmetrical cuts - sometimes it really pays off to expand your horizon and see where it will lead. And in this case, I think it's led you to a wonderful place.

Keep it up!

Size definitely helps! Although this started life a little bigger then it is here. When i fist finished cutting i didn't like the shape i have created, so i cut it down quite a bit. Its hard to remove large chunks after spending so much time cutting it. But sometimes you have to, and it made the final image much more pleasing on the eye.

Thanks so much xxx

Sometimes a little sacrifice can lead to a much better final result; letting go is not always a bad thing. I agree with you here, what you have done here is very pleasing to the eye. I still think you've done a wonderful job over all.

You're more than welcome.
Hope to see more from you in the future.

Yep, it can be disheartening cutting things away when i've spent hours cutting it. but it was worth the sacrifice !

It certainly looks that way to me. I don't know what you had to sacrifice to accomplish what you have here - but what you have here is smashing.

It did take a while. Thankfully i was doing it on and off around commissioned work, and it acted like a brake from other stuff. Does mean that any guess on how long it took is probably wrong

They're both good but I like the blue one because blue is my fave colour! Honestly you have the patience of a saint and a hand steadier than...can't think of a good analogy but you get my meaning!

NO!!!! i do not get your meaning !!! i demand you think of an analogy right now !!!

haha, thanks. I prefer the blue one as well, the colour somehow makes it look even more complex then it really is. Right now i'm just trying to find a way to frame it :S i've had some ideas, just need to see if any of them will work.
