Description "The Valkyrie Assault Carrier is a twin-engine attack craft used for aerial insertions and drop missions. Screaming across a battlefield, a Valkyrie aircraft deploys its cargo into the fray, providing a deadly torrent for covering fire as the troopers within disembark...

Having inserted troops to the battlefield, Valkyries are tasked with providing supporting fire. They carry a fearsome array of anti-personnel rockets that can shatter entire formations. Lethal strafing runs leave a trail of destruction in their wake...

With a few notable exceptions, Valkyries are under the control of the Imperial Navy and are attached to Imperial Guard regiments on an as need basis."

- Codex: Imperial Guard.

"Brunhild", as the two-century old airframe is affectionately called by her crew, is the lead craft in the air support wing of the Imperial Navy troop-carrying frigate "Emperor's Omnipresent Will". Unlike most crafts of her class, whose lifespan is counted among the shortest of all Imperial war machines, "Brunhild" had weathered through ages of constant warfare due to the immense skill of her crew and the loving ministrations of the "Omnipresent's" techpriests.

For the last few decades, the "Omnipresent" had served as the dedicated transport for the XXI Lynnari Airborne Regiment of the Imperial Guard, the Skyrangers. During those years, the frigate's air support wing had integrated with the regiment as close as it is at all possible, mixing the Skyrangers' tactics of night-time and urban combat with their own experience of battles within the light-less Void. Their machines now sport the gray-and-black camouflage of the XXI Lynnari.

"Brunhild's" weapon loadout:
* 1x Lascannon (nose mount)
* 2x Multiple Rocket Pods (wing mounts)
* 2x Heavy Bolters (side door mounts)

Valkyries - the BEST thing about the new Imperial Guard Codex. This one was painted for a competition started with the release of the Codex. I like how it turned out, but it wasn't good enough, and the competition was really good. Besides, I made a couple of painting mistakes, especially on the black stripes, and some of the decals peeled off during transportation . I was considering to paint over the stripes (which might have made it look better - Keep It Simple, Stupid), but since I already invested some time into painting them, I decided to keep them.

Coloring scheme is adapted from the vehicles in my army, with the edge stripes on the bird replacing the wider uneven diagonal stripes on them. I did not permanently attach the wings and the stand for easier transportation, and left the canopy unattached as well. The door guns and the ramp open, and the bolt guns can be swung in and out.

Color scheme:
* Black primer
* Codex Grey basecoat (several layers in alternating directions), with Fortress Grey underbelly
* Fortress Grey dry-brushed for the weathering effect
* Chaos Black on wing and empennage edges, and tail booms
* Boltgun Metal with black wash on engines and landing gear
* Boltgun Metal with brown wash, black wash and solid Chaos Black on the engine exhausts
* Brown with Boltgun Metal dry-brushed for "scuffed paint" effect on the interior and ramp, with Chaos Black detailing (not seen on the photo)
* Chaos Black and Boltgun Metal on weapons (dry-brushed on rocket pods), with Blazing Orange muzzles and ammo storage.

Markings:
* Left side of cockpit (not visible): "Brunhild" (written in Futhark runes) - vehicle name.

Completed on 05/16/09. Approx. 4 hours assembly, 4 - 6 hours painting. Acrylics on plastic, measures approx. 14'' length, 2'' max. height, 10'' wing span on a 6'' stand. Model and quote from Codex: IG by Games Workshop.

Congrats on the win. Unfortunately, my bird did not win anything, otherwise it would have had a landing pad to perch on.

Your interior looks cool (I'll leave the comments on the photos themselves). As for interior, my advice would be to adapt your vehicles' coloring scheme. Photos of WWII and modern aircrafts would also be a good reference.

Oh yea .. I've been doing this for quite a few years and WWII books are great reference tools ... I won the Valkyrie model in a Huge Apocalypse Multi-Player battle that had my Baneblade take out a few Titans and still took a beating ... and to think, i was gonna save up money MONTHS ago to get the Forgeworld model ... nuts to that now!! -lol-

i like the black stripes, not to shure about the orange lascannon, but i like the orange on the engine. impressive paint job, how does the stand attach to the body, is there a slot to fit it in, or is it glued on just to the underbelly?

Skyrangers were partially influenced by Soviet Airborne troops, so their personal weapons color scheme was taken from this: [link] . If you look close at the front view, you'll see that the heavy bolters have the same scheme of black with orange on the muzzle and the ammo crate. This got carried over to the vehicle weapons. It's not obvious on the photo, but the heads on the multi-rockets are also painted orange.

The orange marks on the engines are decals from the IG vehicle sheet. I wanted to make them look like the "Danger: Hot" labels you sometimes see on the intake/exhaust nozzles of jet engines.

The Valkyrie kit comes with a part that has the slot for the stand. It glues to the underbelly, but is a bit tricky - you need to widen the slot a bit, otherwise the stand will not fit through it. Without that part, directly gluing the stand to the underbelly would be structurally unstable - Valkyries are relatively heavy.

i really really need to buy one, but i have 45 guardsmen i need to paint first, i like how you took ideas from the soviets, i had planed to base colour scene on world war 2 planes, camo on top and gray on bottom,

I used those as reference too, went out to look up some photos of night fighters. I ended up with something like the standard Navy gray scheme, with some elements taken from the Skyrangers' cammo.

I'm adding the layout of the color scheme above.

ow i have digressed a little form my original question, so does that mean you can either have it permitally glued to the base in flight or landed, or does it just require a but of pinning?

Well, the lock part (a block about 3/4'' across with a cross slot in it) is permanently attached to the underbelly. The stand is inserted in it, and it has a firm enough fit that it does not require gluing. So, you can remove the stand if you want to.
