Description 100 Pictures Challenge #5: Seeking Solace.

In these hours of waiting what did they do? [...] (They) sought each other out and got together, as in the most peaceful days of their student conversations, and in a corner of this bistro turned into a pill box, within two steps of the redoubt they had thrown up, their carbines primed and loaded resting on the backs of their chairs, these gallant young men, so near their last hour, began to recite a love poem.

Les Miserables, Volume 4, Book 11, Chapter 6

Continuing my quest to illustrate the hell out of the barricade chapters. Because Bayard & Co. have done a wonderful job just about everywhere else, but have all but neglected the insurrection bits.

Title is taken from the first line of their love poem, "Vous rappelez-vous notre douce vie" (Do you remember our sweet life). Because the title bar won't let me type the entire line.

Apologies for inflicting more of this crap upon my non-Les Mis viewers.

Les Miserables written by Victor Hugo.

Looks a lot like a painting known as "The Sciences Lesson", made during the 18th century, with all the guys around one source of light, and the rest remaining in shadow.

Not familiar with the title, but are you referring to something by Joseph Wright of Derby? Because this picture was certainly inspired by the way he uses light in some of his pictures, like the one about the experiment with the air pump.

This would have to be the most beautiful Friends of the ABC picture I've ever seen. Everything about it so just so beautiful.

And you Mizzie viewers...love it.

Thank you very much. That's one of my favourite scene from the barricade; it's like peace in the middle of the storm.

This is fantastic. I love that you included the quote. A picture really is worth a thousand words.

Is the shadowed figure in the front Marius? That would explain his more somber expression, contrasted with the smiles and laughter of the other students.

Thank you very much!

The guy next to Bahorel is just some random insurrectionist (since they were fighting alongside a lot of working Joes); the guy sitting to the left, behind Feuilly, is a fandom joke: Marguerite from Abaisse had written a number of fics in which (the very real) Sadi Carnot was Combeferre's friend from the Polytechnique, so I included a person in this picture who looked just a *little* bit like Carnot (even though the real Carnot was nowhere near the barricades at the time of the insurrection).

I've been reading too many of *Pika-la-Cynique s comics lately and was beginning to like Javert way too much.
In a way it's almost soothing to see the "real" Javert - old, grumpy, lurking in the back just waiting to make our heros' life miserable. Good. Now I can go back to picturing myself dropping pianos and the like on him.
Oh, and I want you to upload that Javert portrait you linked to. Now! Seriously, if someone doesn't like your LeMis stuff he can just hit that little convenient back button. But don't deny us great artworks. You hear me? Don't do that!

I was going to write a bit more about how I adore the detailed clothing and yada, yada but this comment is long enough as it is.

You want Javert? there you go then: [link] Enjoy! [Has a chucklefit at the thought of Steffel dropping pianos and other furniture on Javert.]

And thanks very much!

DarthFar In reply to EntirelyInsane [2010-08-25 02:53:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

And certainly: Fricassee and Chowder are in the background to the left; Feuilly (with his sabre) and Combeferre (with his back to the viewer) are listening to Jehan (seated right) recite the love poem as Bahorel (standing, red waistcoat) either cheers him on or is cracking jokes about it; Courfeyrac (standing, with wineglass) is talking to Bossuet, who is seated next to Joly, whose only interest is his tongue; Enjolras is watching the barricade look-outs through the window. And Javert is sitting in the shadows near Enjolras, furtively spying on them. The remaining two guys are two unnamed members of the ABC (although left guy was deliberately made to look a little like Sadi Carnot - who, by the way, *wasn't* at the barricades - because of his ties to Marguerite's fiction).

EntirelyInsane In reply to DarthFar [2010-08-26 01:25:28 +0000 UTC]

Aahhh...okay. Yep, I had most of 'em right. Oh, Joly and his tongue...

Call me an idiot, but could you be so kind as to elaborate some on the whole Sadi Carnot bit? I must admit that I've never heard of him in his life...

Regardless, I love how detail-oriented this is...how everyone's there (Chowder and Fricassee! I can't remember seeing them much in anything else...), and how canon it is.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DarthFar In reply to EntirelyInsane [2010-08-26 05:58:14 +0000 UTC]

Sadi Carnot is a real person: a French scientist/engineer from the Ecole Polytechnique, who did the foundation work for what is now the second law of thermodynamics (the one that says that disorder in an isolated system can only increase with time - kinda like putting a finished jigsaw puzzle in a box and shaking it. The more shaking you do, the more scrambled it will become). To the best of my knowledge, he *wasn't* at the barricades - he was ill in June 1832, and later contracted and died of cholera in August (remember the cholera pandemic sweeping through Europe?). BUT he keeps popping up in Marguerite 's fanfics, as "Combeferre's friend from the Polytechnique" (there was a conversation at Abaisse sometime back about why Enjolras sent Combeferre to the Polytechnique to recruit, and whether Combeferre had been a Polytechnician at some point), so I put somebody inspired by him in the picture. Sans uniform.

Thanks again! and haha, yeah, I don't remember seeing Chowder and Fricassee in anybody else's pictues either!

EntirelyInsane In reply to DarthFar [2010-08-26 12:44:01 +0000 UTC]

Ah, okay. (Wow, you're certainly... knowledgeable, aren't you?) Good idea, then. And that thermodynamics law is cool...I've not heard it before (feels immensely stupid and tiny). Nor have I read any of Marguerite's stuff...maybe I should now, eh?

And you're welcome.
