Description Not another fandom!!

So I recently read Patrick O'Brian's excellent Master and Commander... and then chased it down with the 2003 movie. And really? all those scenes of Stephen Maturin and Jack Aubrey "scrape scrape, screech screech"-ing (as the steward disdainfully describes it) were just too amusing to simply let alone. Maturin's singularly hideous coat gets a cameo.

And somewhere out there, Jack Aubrey is protesting, "I am not *that* portly!"

Now I need to read the rest of the books...

The Aubrey-Maturin books written by Patrick O'Brian.

Yeah, the movie was dead cool. So are the books, only some people find it a little disjointed and slow. But if you give it a chance, you might have fun. Some bits are perfectly hilarious.

Thanks!

That sounds good, I have no problem with a "slow" narrative style.
You're welcome. And happy christmas

Fantastic! I adored the film (the books are great too!)- it's also the first time I heard the Bach cello suite, which I have since learned to play (except for the fifth suite... omg, so hard. :/ I love these pieces though). It had some amazing music in it, actually...
So funny when Killick is complaining about the music. XD
Excellent work on this, btw.

I wasn't even aware this movie was based on a book. I saw it in cinema and bought my dad the DVD for his anniversary - he's such a fan of the Hornblower books that I thought he might like it. How close is the book to the movie. And if you know those, is it similar to the Hornblower books?

Lovely art (I feel so repetitive but it's hard to come up with something else on your pictures). And I applaud the choice of scene, I loved their little sessions.

The movie was actually based on three of the books, I'm told. I've only read two of them so far (I can only get them abroad!), but I could definitely identify elements of the first book in the movie, and the characters are spot-on, so I guess it's true to the spirit of the series? I've never read the Hornblower books, but apparently the friends who recommended O'Brian's books are all Hornblower fans, if that says anything!

Thanks very much!

Yeah, the music scenes just go against all the action bits. They're awesome.

[Even funnier in the books, on account of Jack Aubrey's foul jokes!]

MATURIN! <3 <3 <3

I couldn't read the books. They read like weird nautical dream sequence. They were on a boat, and then they were on horses, and then they were on the boat again, but they were really in a tavern, and then they'd never met.

AUUGHGHHG.

But the movie was awesome! :3

In this case, I must stand with Maturin in choosing the greater one. Not simply because I'm not in service, but also because... well, I'm Far.

Gorgeous! And I'm so very happy for you that you discovered this -- I've read a few of the books and seen the movie ... er ... *multiple* times and I'm always thrilled to see someone finding them for the first time.

(Just wait until you get to the debauched sloth ... )

I love that the ugly coat gets in there as well! Excellent picture, very nicely done.

DarthFar In reply to merlinemrys5 [2011-03-04 03:40:52 +0000 UTC]

I know just *enough* about the sloth to know that *that* was where Marguerite's "Courfeyrac, you have debauched my lobster!" came from! [Of course, now the whole Courfeyrac ≡ Aubrey imagery is firmly cemented in my mind, dangit]

Thanks very much. (And haha, Maturin's rug of a coat *needed* to make an appearance!). I look forward to the rest of the books.

FracturedReality In reply to DarthFar [2011-03-04 03:54:09 +0000 UTC]

-whisper- Nonononono, dinosaurs, mate. Everything is better with dinosaurs. Example: Both Jurassic Park Sequels (which I only watched because dinosaurs were in them), Land of the Lost (TV series and horrendous Will Farrel trash heap, which again, I only watched because dinosaurs were in it) and the Journey to the Center of the Earth (with the guy from The Mummy in it, not the James Mason one. I love the James Mason one. But that's because James Mason is in it. ).
So, to be the ultimate form of Entertainment, M&C needs Dinosaurs in it!!! Like, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, but everyone is speaking with British accents!!!

- whisper - Nononono, that was a reference to Naomi Novik's Temeraire books ya doof! (The tagline's "Napoleonic Wars! with dragons!"). I can't wait to see Peter Jackson make it into a *movie*.

Nice piece of work.. I loved that movie... The ship they used in it used to be the HMS Rose ( a replica of the original Rose) and she was berthed here in Bridgeport, I was on her many times

Oh yeah, I know about it being the HMS Rose - but WOW, you've had the chance to see her. I need to trawl your gallery and look at the ship pictures again.

I dont have any shots of here there.. she got sold years back and went to Rhode Island..then sold to some place in California.. I dont know where she is now..;though I know they changed the name too... it was restored here and kept here for years before all that.. down at Captain's Cove in Brigeport.. (where I shot the pics of the Bounty replica)
