Squirrels are about 19" from tip of tail to nose, and about 9" in height. Their tails are about half their length. We used to see possums around here, but it's been a long time since I've seen one!

Ah ha...they're bigger than I thought. I've only ever seen one at a distance when I was in Denmark many years ago.

Thank you, Lori. He did look skinny--and hungry too. Maybe that's why he was looking hopefully at me!

Thanks, Nancy. He looked pretty skinny and hungry. Next time I go over to that park, I'll bring along some bird seed (which squirrels also like).

He had such a hopeful look! I'll bet anything that people feed those guys. There's a family of black squirrels in the vicinity where I took this pic, and they always eye people walking down the pathway. So I figure they must get some goodies once in awhile, and that made this guy pause for a short minute!

Thanks, Grandma! I love these sweet things...they're just as cute as can be. Do you have whole families of blackies? This little guy seems to have quite a few relatives nearby. I used to see white squirrels, but no more...don't know what happened to them. By the way, whether white, gray or black, they are all the same species: the Eastern Gray Squirrel.

Thanks, Sarah. He's considered an Eastern Gray Squirrel, but he is indeed black (more like a brownish black), as are many of his family members! Sometimes, the gray squirrel has a bit of melanin in him to make him look like a different type of squirrel, but this is the same one we see up and down the east coast.

He's a black squirrel? We don't get many of those in these parts.

No, there aren't too many around here. But there are a few families living near our yard and in this park where I see them all the time. I guess they're growing in number! I never used to see them at all. Also, I haven't seen any white squirrels! They are all really "gray squirrels" but have various pigmentation differences.

Yeah I have yet to see a white one. I wish we had red squirrels I always love the tufts on their ears.
