Don't break yourself trying to save them. While they have you to save them, a medal can't help you much.

I've felt like this before. I love this secret, though. Good for you for saving them, I didn't.

You're probably deserving of that medal.

To those commenting on the "medal" bit and about how ST shouldn't need/want a reward....I think they're just trying to show that they're going to choose saving. I read it as more of a half-smile, sarcastic comment personally, anyway.

Yeah.
I took it that way too :/
like a half joke. I think they're just saying they hope the person appreciates the saving...

Hating is easier.
Saving is more gratifying.

Save, carry on hating if you must. Why should you get a medal for it? It seems rather arrogant, I'm sure everyone's saved someone.

There are some things you should do without wanting material rewards.

Save them. After all, if they were gone, who would you have to hate?

Besides the fact that I really dislike the concept of someone "saving" another person (in the sense that they believe they are the absolute cause for safety or sanity, when really they probably only play a small part in it) this particular deviant expecting some sort of medal for gratifying their hero complex is rather sad.
I understand that I could be misinterpreting the statement, it could have some underlying meaning - but it could just be what it is too, which to me, is rather holier than thou.
A person with such an attitude is more likely to irritate the problem, rather than improve it. Just a feeling, though.

maybe the person really needs their help, but doesn't want it? Maybe the person really needs... saving.
I guess we'll never know.

Well, you said that the ST was arrogant for saying that he should save the person...
Maybe the person needed saving. Not so arrogant that way.

Knowing a similar situation, a someone can be the single trigger, though.
I tend to believe whatever would happen inevitably, but someone can speed up the process and make things easier.
And I also believe the medal is sarcastic.

Hard to tell with writing, but I believe the teller is being sarcastic when he/she talks about getting a medal.
Just a thought.

Just because you hate someone doesn't mean you shouldn't save them, that is, if it's not so much hate you want them to die.

I was in a situation similar (and my similar, I probably just mean in context, most likely nothing like yours) where I had that choice. For a while, I tried and tried to save him. Then, I just gave up and hated him. He ended up in the hospital that night for taking too many advil, thankfully, right after he did so he told his mother (because he didn't want to die).
By hating him, I tried to give him a wakeup call, but by his reaction, he gave himself one.
Maybe you just need to be supportive, but not necessarily to the point where you are draining yourself. Sometimes, people need to figure things out on their own.
