Description Oil on Canvas 11" x 14"

Seen one, ya seen them all. Not to me.

It's a series. Each painting expands on a very quiet theme. It is in this broad-based repetition that each painting's unique characteristics become huge gestures of a "moment". Ya see, they are all going to hang together in one room. Like a melancholic choir of tiny moments forever lost. Without having a rap like "This one is a tree, and this one is huge and mostly purple, etc." The viewer is forced to deal with each face, each moment... Ya know?

Anyway... I see all of these paintings as unique, little eternities of the human condition, and the feminine allure. And, yes, they have bras on. I am only slightly less confused by that as you should be.

MODEL: Carmen (again)... I'm running out of sitters!

From one former "Colonel" to another, glad to see some real talent come from Ledyard. Β When I first saw your paintings my heart broke. Β The emotions, especially in this and Saint No. 44 caused me to reflect, look inward, name the place and time I owned those feelings. Β I have no artistic talent, so am unable to understand how exactly one would not only paint, or even know what to capture-but I can appreciate something beautiful. Β I look forward to being transported back in time by seeing more of your paintings. Β They are painfully beautiful.

Being one of the cult of VB, I was surprised to stumble on you here. Wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I'll say that it certainly wasn't classical painting. I'll keep the gushing brief: I think you have a fantastic command of perspective and contrast which is complimented by the feathery paint application and the smaller, more intimate sizes of the bust portraits. Love it. Bravo, sir.

By Odin’s balls, I didn’t know you had a DA page. Talented fellow! I love Venture Bros! Anyway, about the painting (couldn’t think of a better segue at the moment, sorry)...

All of your works are lovely, but so far, this one is my favorite. I just can’t stop looking at it, and it’s so thought provoking. I guess I love drawing facial expressions too, so this one appealed to me. I want to sit her down, maybe give her a cup of hot cocoa, and ask her what’s on her mind. It’s as if she’s about to say... something... and I might not like it, but I want to listen anyway. Or maybe she won’t say a thing. Beautiful model and beautiful painting!

This is cool, though I like the pic of her in #30 more. Something about her expression in that one...something pensive and concerned. As if she'd look up any minute and then quickly dart her eyes away. Sorry, didn't mean to babble about a completely different painting. This one's good!

Yeah, a "get-to-know-you" for a slightly larger painting. I did work it up to completion, so it's not like it's a sketch.

Okay, when are you gonna paint Patrick Warburton in a bra again? Because that is seriously going to rule.
When I finally come up to NY, i'm bringing a video camera and an afro wig for you, and you and i should seriously consider setting up a Bob Ross-styled syndicated painting show. You could even record your own theme song, and I will just stand behind the tripod and mash the record button when you've adjusted your 'do, and occasionally hold up cue cards with the words "Happy Little..." so you can reference it in your frustrated psychotic ramblings about bitches not holding still long enough.

whatta ya think?

What do you mean "again"? If Patrick lets me do it once, there will be no need for a second time. For the image of that goliath in a bra will be indelibly burned into my mind's eye.

ahahahahaha

and you just know it would be phenomonal.

random noise ensues: have you ever actually done a portrait of a man/boy before? your paints of female models are obviously striking, but what of male models? i'd assumed it was purely an aesthetic sort of preference for females, but you know how it is.. why assume when i can simply ask?

Very powerful, yet somehow subdued at the same time. It's almost as though you've managed to trap the essence of an undefineable emotion. Quite stunning work.

I agree with you Doc about the suttle nature of small gestures and expressions. The body language you give your saints always give them a "moving in time" look. As if they were floating towards the viewer, and almost falling. And with their expressions you have given them something to say emotionally, and as you said oposed to being in your face with directly telling your audiene "this is a big fucking tree and that purple there.. yay thats a "magical" color.. "

Alot of of people could learn from the suttle nature that you, and the other classical artist have shown. Instead of this overt crap where kids put blood on everything and call it emotion without a pose/expression that reads along the same lines as their "blood."

Anyways as always a pleasure to see your beautiful works.

i am in aw of your ability to paint such detail. I struggle so much with that in my paintings. What is your technique for getting the hair so fine and whispy?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Doc-Hammer In reply to lostmessage [2005-02-05 04:07:01 +0000 UTC]

Oh... and the "wispy" effect is how the hair blends with the background and flesh. The technique is called sfumato. It can be attained by having wet paint kiss wet paint, and the two blend subtly along the edge (as in Rubens etc.). Or by inaccurately glazing and re-glazing over an underpainting (as in Titian etc.).

Doc-Hammer In reply to Doc-Hammer [2005-02-05 04:18:07 +0000 UTC]

I just can't leave this question alone...

This just occurred to me... Try this:

Download the picture of my painting and open it in Photoshop. From your to menu chose Adjustments > Levels.
Under the histogram type thing are three triangles. Move the middle (gray) one to the left, by doing this you will increase the shown midtones. And you will really see how modeled the hair has to be to give the perceived effect of no modeling.

Doc-Hammer In reply to lostmessage [2005-02-05 04:00:11 +0000 UTC]

Just paint it as you see it. I usually just squint at the sitter and indicate the highlights that I see with lead white or ochre. The strokes should follow the direction of the hair. I do this quite rapidly. Later I will knock it back with a dark transparent that relates to her hair color. But the main thing is not to over paint it... Just indicate the volume.

hmm that sounds good... my issue is that I have a painting due pretty soon and i fear doing too much glaze work. Having due dates on oil paintings is quite unfair espcially if i used a slow drying medium. OYE this is tough work that frustrates me because I am not used to taking my time.

Brilliant as per usual, Doc. I have no edu-mah-cated critique to offer. Carmen's expression tells me she's swallowed a spider. Or that she's discovered she's been sleeping with a mysterious man who has turned out to be her long lost half-brother.
