yeah depending on which preset, I just thought even if you chose a darker preset it would take into account if you changed the skin colour

Judging by the tat, you're using mods. The new skintones don't match up with any of Bioware's, since they don't just paint the tone on the family - they load family with a similar tone depending on what you use, and if you aren't using Bioware's there isn't any to load. That's probably what happened.
Besides: you could easily fake this just by going to the Emporium and changing your face since their's wouldn't update to match.

Happened to me, too, but I use mods for skin/hair colors (Pineapple Tree's) and the game still registered my Hawke's skin on the darkest end of the slider, while the slider was actually on an extended color range, resulting in that.
(If that makes sense.)

The family's appearance is based primarily on the preset base you select- so if you selected a dark-skinned preset and then significantly altered the features and skin color in the editing part of the process, shit like this happens. I wound up with a white Hawke and a distinctly asian-looking family because of this, after one of my attempts.
