Description

In a random conversation in skype with several friends, there was an interesting topic appeared by a paper published in early February

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10…

The ‘basal notosuchian/sebecian pattern’ is widespread among basal metasuchians, and establishes for the first time characters maintained later in neosuchians and extant forms. The ‘advanced notosuchian pattern’ includes modifications of the MC possibly related to a terrestrial lifestyle and potentially a structure analogous to the mammalian pinna.

If are wondering what is a pinna, is the visible part of the ear, the Auricle that us and most of the mammal species have. This of course, would seem interesting, what if some crocodylomorphs evolved a pinna like mammals? I have taken as a base the head of a Baurusuchidae, showing the different phases where this structure could evolve.

Starting with a basal form, which has a basic pinna with an almost high sheet, following the second phase, which has developed a more extended structure, to the most advanced form with a huge mammal-like external ear which is able to move.

Of course, I'm taking that line of the abstract too literal, even I don't read the paper, so the idea of mammalian pinna in an archosaur itself is just speculation and not a theory, fact or hypotesis, just funny speculation.

Interesting never knew of it. Although one could argue such a notosuchian could evolve "ears" this doesn't mean they would move like those of mammals. As far as we can tell, they could be immobile as well.

Yeah, I had been pointed out the detail that the absence of musculature in the ear would make any movement of the pinnae unlikely.

Its still fairly useful, as long as it can amplify the surrounding sound. This animal you designed, in specific, seems to be able to sense a peripheral sound field.

I am the first author of that paper you mentioned.
It is good to see people discussing it from the paleoart perspective. Really cool!
The top image is closer to what we can infer at this pont.
Cheers,
Felipe

Baurusuchids are the epitome of pseudosuchian badassery.
Like, crocodiles decided : hey, let´s make these crocodiles live on land and be fast runners with crushing bites and FOUR saber teeth in each jaw. And why not throw some whiskers and external ears in for good measure, so we can later lay copyright claims on cats.

And then to realize their early close relatives were as large as rhinoceroses.

Yeah, they were really in a interesting path, even though, a friend noted an interesting aspect in the mechanics of the jaw of the Baurusuchids, that was quite convergent with that of the gorgonopsids, presenting several characteristics similar to these as differentiated teeth, reduced post-canine teeth, and large canines to concentrate the force in a bite.

I've heard about notosuchians possibly having cheeks and fleshy noses like mammals, but never external ears. This is really interesting. Notosuchians were clearly reptiles trying to be mammals if any of this is true.

That is a cool concept. When I design alien creatures, I often prefer not to giving them mammal-like ears, but instead ones more like reptiles or fish. But reptiles with big ears is still a cool switch.

Ah, so that's where you'd put the ears. Thanks, DT- I heard about pinnae in land crocs before, but this should help me get the look I want. (I know it's speculative but I want my scaly mammal-fakes dammit! )

Quite an interesting topic, I think. If such a thing were possible or even a thing I think, as jummbl said below it would be amazing. Good job on the crocodilians too

Asi que es probable que tuviesen orejas? De hehco he oido locuras mas locas como que posiblemente tuviesen filamentos como plumas y que las escamas que vemos en los eosuchidos las hayan perdido estos filamentos por su vida anfibia.

Dragonthunders In reply to malevouvenator [2016-05-12 17:59:01 +0000 UTC]
