Interesting never knew of it. Although one could argue such a notosuchian could evolve "ears" this doesn't mean they would move like those of mammals. As far as we can tell, they could be immobile as well.

Yeah, I had been pointed out the detail that the absence of musculature in the ear would make any movement of the pinnae unlikely.

Its still fairly useful, as long as it can amplify the surrounding sound. This animal you designed, in specific, seems to be able to sense a peripheral sound field.

I am the first author of that paper you mentioned.
It is good to see people discussing it from the paleoart perspective. Really cool!
The top image is closer to what we can infer at this pont.
Cheers,
Felipe

Baurusuchids are the epitome of pseudosuchian badassery.
Like, crocodiles decided : hey, let´s make these crocodiles live on land and be fast runners with crushing bites and FOUR saber teeth in each jaw. And why not throw some whiskers and external ears in for good measure, so we can later lay copyright claims on cats.
And then to realize their early close relatives were as large as rhinoceroses.

Yeah, they were really in a interesting path, even though, a friend noted an interesting aspect in the mechanics of the jaw of the Baurusuchids, that was quite convergent with that of the gorgonopsids, presenting several characteristics similar to these as differentiated teeth, reduced post-canine teeth, and large canines to concentrate the force in a bite.

I've heard about notosuchians possibly having cheeks and fleshy noses like mammals, but never external ears. This is really interesting. Notosuchians were clearly reptiles trying to be mammals if any of this is true.

This looks so odd... Would be really interesting if it was true.

Very cool to think about! Feathered basal Archosaurus would be interesting to see, too...

You should probably either sign into Wattpad, click the "read" button on the page if you can access the site or just try to access it on a different device.
