A cool shot of three cool geared locos.
Shays are awesome and the effect with the steam is really nice.

MUCH more iconic! Steam engines are much more epic than any box on wheels diesel.

Shays are WIN.
My fictional railway, Lake Tahoe Trails, has 5 Shays, not including the 2 Willamette "shays".

Their not fast but if you got to go straight up the hill, nothing beats them!

Well there's some pretty steep parts on the Chinese Downhill, and the curves mean only LTT's some 17 geared engines(or in 4 cases gear/rod hybrids, the Davenports) can tackle the Reno/Incline line. Plus in some cases it's almost too steep for the Davenports! Of course being rod/gear hybrids they're not as powerful, and have to hit top speeds in order to make some parts.

The V&T sounds like a much larger railroad than Cass... The longest trip is a 6 hour 14 mile trip up to the top...Spruce.
Ive got to get over there.

Oh that wasn't the V&T, I was talking about, it was my fictional RR, the LTT.
The V&T goes between Virginia City, Gold Hill, and Mound House. It's building farther into Carson right now, but it is 21 miles from MH to VC, and will go farther, stretching to Carson, every inch of track on the original line, but for a horseshoe curve around Tunnel #3, which collapsed the night rail service to Virginia City was discontinued in 1937. It's a multi-million dollar project to recreate a line between Virginia City, Gold Hill, Mound House, Carson City, and eventually Reno and Minden. The track willstray off original in Minden, however, because the highway has, since 1950, doubled in size, covering the old V&T right-of-way.

LTT is bigger than I would have guessed when I made it. I was originally going to use it as a unanimous railway over several trails, and suddenly it's a fictional railway with 20 geared engines(I forgot the Dunkirk Class B's earlier on) 2-4-4-2s, C-16s, C-25s, and B-4-Es (A B-4-E is basically an AWESOME Consolidation with a Wagon Top Boiler)!

SWEET!! I didn't know there were any of those old logging locos left running! I'm a big fan of the old Northwest logging era. You've probably heard of Darius Kinsey, the famed photographer, who captured many of these engines in action. [link]
Shays, Climaxes and Heisler's to name the most prominent.
I've seen the pics of those grades...and still am almost unable to believe how they did it.
What state is Cass in?

West Virginia. Cass is part of the state park commission and regularly runs tourist trains up and down the mountain with upwards of 6 operable steam engines, although they usually run with 3 on two trains.

Its amazing! You wont be dissapointed. Your best time to go is during railfan weekend when they have 4 or 5 engines running, are doing photo runbys, and night photo sessions.

Ah, these are those who have something like crankshaft on the side? And the cylinders too of course. I have seen these only in Trainz simulator and wondered what the heck they are! : D

Beautiful photo! I've been wanting to go down to Cass for years. Do the still have the WM shay down there? Is it the one in the middle?

Awesome pic!
And I hate when people hate on shays because they go so slow...in the backwoods mountain territory it's not safe to go more than 15mph no matter what type of locomotive your in...

Very. I've only seen one of them in person before, Little River Lumber #2147, but I still love them anyways.
