Description
A event that hasnt happened since the 1970s. One of the biggest highlights of 2012 was shooting NKP 765 rounding Horseshoe Curve just west of Altoona, PA. I was one of a dozen railfans that set up at this spot including Norfolk Southern's official photographer and one of the editors of Trains magazine.The other highlights for me was chasing ATSF3751 to the Grand Canyon and the heritage unit gathering at Spencer, NC.

Why does she need a diesel to help her? Steam engines never had diesels helping them back when they were queens of the rails!

Just how it is now. But actually during the transition in the 1950s, there was plenty of times there was a steam diesel combo. That combo actually works pretty well also. Diesels can get started fairly easy but reach a top speed sooner. A steam loco can go much faster than a diesel once the train is moving.

I like the more gradual accelerations that steam engines feature. The superior speeds that steam engines posses more than shows that they are more than capable of pulling express passenger trains by themselves.
