Description A brush-and-ink illustration of a pulp-style Panda air pirate I have recently drawn. As well as brush and ink, I have also used permanent Black markers and fineliners. I based the design of his outfit loosely on the armour of a Mongol warrior. The flying helmet was inspired by the early-model (1920's-30's) Red Army helmet. I haven't gotten round to blessing this character with a name.

Hi Stuart!

Great work in your gallery! I like this character especially. I will be watching for new images. Too often, we viewers are guilty of overlooking really well-done B&W work in favor of brightly colored alternatives ('magpie gene', I guess. lol) Thanks for sharing!

p.s.-
Thanks also for the fav on 'Warrior II'

Thanks, Tom!!

I must say that your work is totally out of this world.

Alas, like I've told other users of DA, I'm not quite able to submit as much work as I should that often due to the fact that I do not yet have a computer.

If possible, I will try and submit more work on DA when I can.
Have you seen my "Huskie Thing" piece? It's some fan artwork of Mayra Boyle's character, Huskie, inspired by the John Carpenter film, "The Thing"

My pleasure, Stuart! Thanks for the enthusiastic compliment as well. I did see the Huskie Thing image and loved it (the dog 'erupting' is one of my favorite scenes from the film , too). Good luck with getting your computer. I was a little resistant to the idea back in '92, but now I feel handicapped when I don't have one nearby. LOL

p.s.- Thanks for the friend watch as well!

Worry no more!! A few months back, I got myself a laptop as part of an internet deal.

Yeah, I know what you're thinking. I'm atrociously late in replying to this message. Never mind-better late than never.

Excellent news! Glad to hear back. Work has kept me rather distant from DA for a few weeks myself. (For some odd reason, I've been unable to squeeze the usual 30+ hours out of an average day.LOL)

The only problem is that there's something wrong with the connectivity. It just doesn't seem to want to connect to DA properly. It's working okay for the time being, but for how much longer, I don't know.

Best,

I get sporadic problems from time to time, but chalked it up to server overloads on their end.

Good luck,

Wow, this is quite a wonderful piece (and the Daily Deviation definitely suggests this point too). Very nice details and rendering technique. The overall presentation is a very original style.

Well, the detail is excellent. I can see you pay close attention to it, and you do a good job with it. The expression on it's face is also well-done, you don't have to look at it too long to see that he is a tough guy. Great job on the anatomy and pose too.

But the one thing I thought needed improvement, was the overall shape and look of his face. The expression is fine, but I couldn't tell it was a panda until I saw the title. It looks too much like a lion. Maybe if you made the jaw more rounded, and the muzzle a little shorter, it would look more panda-like.

This is a wonderfully executed drawing, just a few things here and there.

Yes, you're probably right. His muzzle could be a little shorter. I suppose, on reflection, the "scruffy" chin sort of makes him look more lionlike. If I had made him look chubbier, he would have looked a little too comical.

MartinSilvertant [2007-09-13 15:10:55 +0000 UTC]

The head and also the logo look more like that of a lion than that of a panda. That's really the only point that perhaps could be a negative one in this illustration. The amount of textures and details are amazing, though.
Everything is really well thought out, and I particularly like the "fan" and the grating in front of it. Superb design!

duraluminwolf In reply to MartinSilvertant [2007-09-13 16:39:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. I do like to put my heart into my work. What I was trying to do with the character's face was to make him look menacing. I think I've got the nose and markings fairly spot-on though.

The fan is probably my favourite part of the background.

MartinSilvertant In reply to duraluminwolf [2007-09-13 16:44:52 +0000 UTC]

I have to agree that if you would have drawn the head of the panda bear in a more realistic way, it would probably look funny instead of menacing. That's also why I said that it's perhaps a negative point. Because I really wouldn't know how to solve that myself. It does look great no matter what, though. You more than deserved this DD.
