Description Update: Added teeth + updated textures.

I played the Dawn of War 2 beta and felt like modeling an Ork. I've been learning more about ZBrush and head anatomy, so I wanted some hands-on practice.

Modeled and textured entirely in ZBrush, based on the humanhead1.ztl file. (Which is free at Pixologic.com)

Rendered in 3DS Max using MentalRay's SSS skin shader and my own settings and ZBrush texture. The eyes were also made in Max, in Pixar style but with a texture.

I adjusted the colors in Photoshop and added the background, which uses pictures I took myself of various surfaces.

This is just a work-in-progress render. I still have to add the inside of the mouth and smaller skin details like wrinkles or scars.

Nice, but the teeth in the lower jaw seem to be curving out. The eyes could do with being a bit more off-white & bloodshot.

Good green skin texture thigh :]

Thanks. I based this off of an untextured Zbrush sculpt I saw of the Dawn of War 2 warboss, so I really couldn't get a sense of the colors involved. Different orc references have different skin and eye colors, but I do think I'll make them much more red in the future.

U work with the mouse or you have a graphic tablet?

I do have a tablet (12x9") but so far I've only used a mouse for this. A tablet works great with ZBrush though, but I just usually end up using the mouse for most things out of habit.

Well I've tried only the mouse so far, I wanna buy a wacom just to see the difference.

Yeah, just get a cheap one if you can, so you don't waste your money in case you don't like it. It's a lot like drawing though, so it's pretty good for when you're doing digital painting or sculpting.

Thanks a lot. I'm also working with colors a lot since that's one of my weak areas. I've always drawn and modeled things so I didn't have enough practice with actual coloring.

Once I finish this model, I'll use ZAppLink to switch between ZBrush and Photoshop so I can play around more with different colors and give it a proper texture. Right now I just have the base colors I painted in ZBrush.

Well, my shader wasn't great yet since I didn't have a proper specular map and no bumps/displacements from ZBrush (this is a 160k poly model, not the 1.3 million poly high version)...but what I did was fix the colors a lot in Photoshop after rendering it. You can experiment a lot in PS then go back and change your texture and shaders based on that.

The final version should look pretty different from this in terms of the colors and materials. I'm still experimenting, I don't have a final look in mind yet.

Thanks a lot. Once I get used to the muscle flow of the head and the wrinkles, I should be able to get some nice ZBrush creatures going. I thought this was good practice today.
