Description VIDEO HERE

RTS - "Red Ant" Experimental Walker Unit Scene (Updated on July 20. Improved rock textures & added detail textures)

Different Walker Angle
Light Artillery Unit
Quad Tank

Real-time Strategy Game style, red team. (Like in Supreme Commander, Total Annihilation, Starcraft, Command and Conquer, Warhammer 40000: Dawn of War, etc.)

I'm done with the texturing on this one. I added

Walker
2048x2048 Texture map + 256x256 Detail Map (10x10 tiling)
2048x2048 Normal map + 256x256 Detail Map (10x10 tiling)
1024x1024 Specular map.
128x128 Environment map.

I put the models in an RTS game-like scene to give an idea of how they'd look in a game. The environment objects use fairly small maps. (128x128 for the grass texture, 256x256 for rocks)

Environment
I placed the rocks, pebbles and grass around using a particle system (PF Source) with some variation in terms of rotation and size.

Other
Modeling and rendering was done in 3DS Max, UV mapping in DeepUV and all texturing was done in Photoshop.

That's okay. I don't either come to think of it. Just an impulsive question.

Thank you! I have lots of graphics/art/movie-related hobbies and I enjoy creating things enough to always study, practice and try to get better at it.

I myself just wanna make games, maybe stories/books and a bit of drawing/pixel-ating here and there (Which I think I already mentioned the making games part)

I'm always thinking of new ways to improve my RPs and games I created in my mind

As I mentioned earlier, I've been addicted to games since I was 6... ever since I was 6 I wanted to make games too ^u^ (Never changed my mind yet and not plannin' on it)

One thing I can't do is the 3D art you can do >.> Don't know how or what to use for it (which is the 2nd reason on why I started spriting, the first being Picture Wars)

... Wow that's a lot 0.o

The good thing about art today is that you can learn about absolutely any art medium and get good at it for free.

On the internet you can find text and video tutorials which will teach you to create anything.

You wanna create a 3D spaceship? Go to Google and look up "modeling a spaceship". You wanna give it nice futuristic colors and textures? Look up "Texturing a spaceship in Photoshop".

Creating videogame graphics involves many different fields. It basically works like this:

Written idea > Concept (drawing or digital painting, sometimes involving Photography to gather reference images for ideas or for use with concepts or textures) > 3D model > UV Mapping > Texture (usually done in 2D, in Photoshop) > Additional maps (Specular, Gloss, Bump or Normal Map, etc.) > Rigging (prepping for animation) > Animation > Lighting > Render > Post-processing work (Usually in 2D in Photoshop for images or After Effects or other apps for video compositing, special effects, etc.)

It's a lot of work and there are many, many things to study if you want to be able to create something from beginning to end. That's why most people focus on 1-2 things like just drawing, just modeling, just texturing, etc.

On the internet though, you can learn about any one of those steps by getting tutorial DVDs and books created by very talented professionals or by other passionate amateurs. Just look up anything you're interested in learning and you'll find it.

Very true

I'm not completely sure what field of Video Game Design I wanna do though, Coding, Sound, Graphics, Story (Being basic categories)

But I think I'll do that thanks for the advice ^u^
(I need to learn how to use GIMP >.> So that'll be one of the first things lol)

But yes, definitely true, we can easily find things online now ^u^

Including apps!
*wink, wink*

You can "try out" Photoshop, Max, Maya, ZBrush or anything else.

Well my friend is using GIMP so I'm considering trying it (again) ^u^

And yes many apps XD
Some of them can be enjoyable XD *Lawling*

I wish there were more games like Supreme Commander. Why do all RTSs have to follow a SC/CnC pattern?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DXBigD In reply to MalletMann [2009-05-16 07:28:25 +0000 UTC]

I guess people don't like to manage so many units. Also the levels look nicer in other RTS games, though none are as huge and epic as the ones in SupCom.

I don't know but personally, I can appreciate different RTS games. I don't care if they don't have great zooming like SupCom and Demigod, the second Starcraft 2 comes out, I'm playing it.

MalletMann In reply to DXBigD [2009-05-16 16:49:13 +0000 UTC]

I also like such games, but it seems there are much more games that seem to clone CnC and SC than try something different. Another game that I enjoyed is Homeworld. I think there should be more games of that genre.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DXBigD In reply to MalletMann [2009-05-16 17:11:50 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the Homeworld games just faded away, unfortunately.

There was a space RTS game by Stardock called Sins of a Solar Empire, and an expansion. You might wanna try that if you've never played it, but it's not exactly like Homeworld, it's just an RTS game set in space with bases, planets, huge randomly generated levels, etc. Pretty good but larger maps can take hours to finish.

MalletMann In reply to DXBigD [2009-05-16 23:08:14 +0000 UTC]

I have Sins. Really good game, but doesn't have the story and detail of Homeworld. Another game like it will probably eventually be made, look how long it took them to make Supcom after TA.

DXBigD In reply to MalletMann [2009-05-17 06:00:57 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I really hope so. I love space games but the "good" ones tend to only be MMO games at this point. Eve Online, Stargate Evolution, etc. I love good graphics but I like either being able to control my ship in real-time manually, or to control fleets of them!

With today's tech, I would like to see what it would look like.

E-Samurai [2009-03-31 15:59:32 +0000 UTC]

Very good! Just one question, how come that the rock textures are 256x256? I mean, I'm not expert with texturing, how you make them look like that with that size?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DXBigD In reply to E-Samurai [2009-04-04 23:56:59 +0000 UTC]

It's simple, you make tiling textures and you tile them a few times. For the small rocks I can use a 256x256 texture or less, but for the larger ones I gave them a material with that texture repeated 5-10 times vertically and horizontally.

spec maps could use some love though its a nice pack

DXBigD In reply to ikarus-tm [2008-07-08 05:15:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. They're pretty basic for the walker right now - I didn't get into any details with the specular map. I'll probably go back and add the finishing touches once I texture all the race/faction units.

I'm still working on modeling the rest and making them match this art style.

riikuumikura [2008-06-29 00:14:55 +0000 UTC]

That looks mint, I imagine the combined attacks of all those units could do quite a bit of damage...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DXBigD In reply to riikuumikura [2008-07-12 03:51:48 +0000 UTC]

Definitely. I plan on animating most or all of these units unless I can find someone to get them in Supreme Commander. If I have time to make a short animation involving all of them, I will.

SirCula [2008-06-27 17:04:55 +0000 UTC]

looks cool, the pictures a bit big and I think the units look better a bit further away from the camera

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DXBigD In reply to SirCula [2008-06-27 17:59:39 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. They're game graphics so really they don't have enough polygons to look nice and smooth up-close, but seeing as they're Supreme Commander-like units, you'd mostly see them very small in-game. That's really what I made them for. (and that's also why they have such visible team colors instead of being all grey/brown metal like real-life vehicles)

Looks great, kudos on the walker and tanks.

Maybe you can put the haze behind the rocks or just add some more big rocks in the background.
Put them in the background a bit and space the rocks so they block the open spaces left by the set of rocks in the foreground and that will stop the worry about people seeing that there is nothing past the rocks.

Could also make a skydome, a dome with a cloud texture on it. Put the skydome over the scene and you have clouds/sky behind the rocks.

MDKofDOOM [2008-06-23 02:48:20 +0000 UTC]

I want one of those scorpion-walker things. This looks great. The not as good thing I can think is that the dust is too thick, and it makes it difficult to see the tanks and the legs of the walker.

Other than that I absolutely love it. Fave.

DXBigD In reply to MDKofDOOM [2008-06-23 02:52:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot. I added some fog in Max simply to hide the fact that there was nothing outside the camera's view in the distance.

I guess I'll have to add some noise if I wanna make it more like dust.
