I KNOW! People always forget about "Little Mermaid 3" and, I understand, it's cheesy and a little underwhelming BUT I LOVE IT and it always makes me feel so happy afterwards.

Hello. I hope you are well.
As someone who is a fan of your fanart, and also a person who greatly dislikes TLM3, I thought I would explain why I (and many other fans) don't like it.
I'm going to go in order of greatest severity.
1. You may not know this (depending on your age), but after TLM came out, Disney spent all of the '90's releasing supplemental material. Books, comics, a tv show, albums, TLM2 (in 2000). While some contradictions came up, overall we had a large body of supplemental material (I'm going to call this body of works SM for convenience). I personally still have a very strong emotional connection/reaction to these beloved works of my childhood.
TLM3 invalidates it all.
The biggest way is through blatant mischaracterization.
a. I love Flounder. He will always be one of my favorite characters. What I love most about him, is that no matter what, he is ALWAYS there for Ariel. No matter how easily scared or prone to panicking, he always comes through. He is the only one under the sea who accepts all of her, unconditionally.
Flounder's easily scared and prone to panicking personality is highlighted throughout SM, as well as TLM. In the TV series, we already had a flashback to his first meeting with Ariel, where they are two young children, and both awkward misfits. I do not recognize him in TLM3. This carefree music rebel is not the Flounder I know and love.
b. Sebastian. His personality is also consistent throughout SM, TLM, and TLM2. He is King Triton's right hand, and he follows the rules. In TLM, after finding about Ariel's grotto and subsequent events, he spends all his time panicking about what King Triton will say. He then completely loses composure and has a meltdown in front of Triton, telling him everything. In TLM2, when Melody runs away, he starts an anxious mantra about having to stay calm. That lasts until he sees Ariel β the second he sees her he starts running around screaming βMelody's gone! Melody's gone!β
There is no way this character would even think about leading a rebel group; much less be able to pull it off.
c. Ariel's sisters. TLM and SM make it clear Ariel is NOT close to her sisters. They don't understand her. It is the major theme of TLM β Ariel is trans-species, and she is not accepted by her family or society. (in one episode she befriends a sea monster because they are both outcasts. There are many outcast!Ariel moments highlighted in SM)
In SM, the birth order is made explicit: Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Attina, Adella, Alana, Ariel. We also get to see more of their personalities.
Aquata is the oldest. She worries that because she can't control Ariel, she will be a bad queen. She is also a great dancer and has studied ballet.
Adrina is very athletic, and she loves gymnastics and sports.
Arista. She can be snooty, tattling and complaining about Ariel breaking the rules. She and Ariel REALLY don't get along. In one episode, after getting beached(grounded), she confesses that she has always been jealous of Ariel adventuring, because she is not that outgoing. However, she does love to ride seahorses.
Attina. She is a bookworm and has a pet catfish named Fin Fin. She warns Ariel not to do things.
Adella. She has a heavier figure than her sisters. She is shallow, vain, and dates a lot.
Alana. She is the cool popular sister.
Almost all of this is contradicted in TLM3.
2. Queen Athena's character. We get almost no info on her in SM. Many of us were disappointed by her physical looks, because SM shows us Triton having Ariel's red hair. If both of Ariel's parents have red hair, there is no reason her sisters should have the range of hair color and eye color that they do.
Athena's death does extreme damage to the plot of TLM. Triton's main plot line is that he is prejudiced/racist towards humans for no good reason:
βYou could've been seen by one of those barbarians - by - by one of those humans! [cut] They're dangerous. Do you think I want to see my youngest daughter snared by some fish-eater's hook?β [cut] βContact between the human world and the mer-world is strictly forbidden. Ariel, you know that! Everyone knows that! [cut] One less human to worry about! [cut] Know him? I don't have to know him. They're all the same. Spineless, savage, harpooning, fish-eaters, incapable of any feeling-β
Everyone knows where Ursula lives, and merpeople disappear on a frequent basis because of her, but Triton doesn't care. Nor does he care when Flounder tells him that he and Ariel were almost eaten by a shark β two much bigger threats to Atlantica than humans.
IF Ariel's mom was killed by humans, the plot and opinions of Ariel and Triton in TLM make no sense. Such an extreme change to the main storyline of the original film is not something I can make peace with.
This last criticism about Athena's character is a more personal dislike. WHY does Athena risk her life, and get killed, for a gift she just got? Triton can get her another. This makes Athena look extremely stupid.
3. This one is also more personal. Marina Del Ray is a weak villian.
Ursula, on the other hand, is one of Disney's strongest and most iconic villains. Her childhood with Morgana is talked about a little bit in TLM2, TLM tells us that she lived in the palace in Atlantica before Triton exiled her, and in the tv series it's hinted she was banished because she tried to create dark tridents and attack Atlantica with her army of octopids. There is SO MUCH here that Disney could have explored. But they didn't.
Anyway, I just want to thank you for taking the time to read this. I wish you all the best.

Oh my GOODNESS, you've really done your research! I agree with you on all your points. I spent a lot of time going through the supplemental material when I was in my late teens (which was, to be honest, WAY after the stuff was released, but I just love Disney), and I really loved all of it. I do get what you're saying; I appreciate TLM3, but for shallow reasons. I like the artwork, and I love Jodi Benson. I agree with you 100% that it is NOT a very good movie, however I still watch it just to appreciate those two factors. Thanks for taking the time to explain all of this to me!

HEE. Well. . . WELL. . . I. . . I'm hopeless, really. If almost ANYTHING has a Disney stamp on it, it's instant love. BUT REALLY. It may be because I have--in all appearances--the mind and soul of a five year old, but REALLY. I LOVED LITTLE MERMAID III. I REALLY DID. But, two of my brothers thought it was AWFUL, so I suppose you'll have to choose for yourself. (HEE. But the other five brothers that I SHOWED it to liked it. . . but, they might have just been saying that to avoid me asking any more questions)

I liked it. It's wasn't bad. I just think that people were expecting it to be like the first and second and it's like, "No... It's not..." They went in with a idea of what it should be and as a result, it didn't turn out as good. I think it was good. It was interesting to see what was going on with Ariel before the whole prince thing. Haha. So, I don't have the song but it's on my list of ones to get. Good picture! When are you moving? I still want you to be on here even then! You're too popular and loved too much to leave!
