I prefer the technique better on this one, but the shapes in the other one are preferable, such as the eyes and the overall facial structure. (:

the facial structure is the same in this one, i think, if not only slightly altered... although the view of it is changed by the position of his facial features. I do agree that I could make this much better now.

I personally prefer the 1st and 2nd ones, actually..
not that this one isn't awesomely awesome. 
maybe it's b/c the color range has been a little desaturated in this one...
in the first two, the hair has wonderful contrast, and that messy yet confidently placed line-work.
it has just the right detail to gain just the right amount of attention, but not so much as to distract from those beautiful eyes and pouting lips.
the colors in the faces were eloquently chosen, placed, and loosely refined to give the sense of dimension without looking overly smoothed and perfected.
I very much enjoy the first one for this reason.
you've included both soft and hard shadows and highlights..which makes it much more convincing, for me.
I also prefer the facial structure and proportions of the first two faces.
Perhaps you aren't giving yourself enough credit in being able to get things right the first time?

oh definitely, I find myself wanting to rework old work all the time.
but I think old work is really good to learn from,
so sometimes- they're better staying in that past style
