Description (2006) 9"x12" Pencil on Paper

Another Lucius drawing from GOF. This one was interesting to do, because I got to do some costume research. I had first thought that Lucius in the graveyard scene was wearing some kind of cassock with a cloak over it, when in fact it turned out the whole thing is one single-piece caped robe. - Very helpful if the Dark Lord calls you and you have little time to get all kitted out in evil-garb.

The only bit I made up is the design on the large pendant he wears in the graveyard scene, because the reference photo just didn't give up the secret. So I went ahead and chose the Sigil Dei Aemeth. It's a sigil that Dr. John Dee, court magus to Queen Elizabeth I, received during a scrying session. It seemed appropriate for a powerful wizard like Lucius.

Oh yeah, and I dabbled in some background - am still in shock over that.

Thank you! I still haven't figured out to my satisfaction what it really looks like. But I can live with my interpretation for now.

Very nicely done. It reminds me that even evil villains can look good. Just take a good look at Darth Vader, as the baddest bad guy in Star Wars, or the dreaded Lord Sauron in Lord Of The Rings

I think I need to get back to sketching again. It's been a while since I've done a good sketch. I usually sketch in ballpoint pen more than pencils so it is more of a challenge for me.

Nice work.....keep it up

I have to admit, I have a sneaking admiration for the smooth, confident evil bastards.

You know like Vader, Lucius, Dracula (Gary Oldman in Coppola's version...the creepiest Dracula ever), the one who must not be named..... and countless other smooth badies in books, TV and movies. They could be good, but they choose to be bad...

Oh yes, love that Dracula movie! Oldman was a brilliant incarnation of the Count!

I've seen many dracula movies, including the originals with Bela Legosi, veteran actors Christopher Lee and others. Gary Oldman came up with the creepiest, scariest, most bizarre, and yet.....stylish Dracula.
It was VERY unusual for the time (1800s) to have rose colored sunglasses. Yet gary looked cool wearing those custom suits, both in the city, and when he was in Transylvania. It was the one Dracula movie that really focused on the tragic love story of Dracul and his bride elizabetha.....

I bet it would be an interesting challenge to you, if you could draw a portrait of Gary Oldman as the handsome Count Dracula in his best clothes. Maybe someday you could try it out...

Just let me know, so that I can see the results....

I guess I'd have to pick the moment when he fixes his gaze on Mina across the street and murmurs: "See me now..." So powerful!

Hmmm, that sounds like a recipe for a great peice of art. A powerful emotional moment in time in the movie. Do you think you can capture the essence and the emotion of that scene on paper?

I think there is much magic and power in your hands and pencils. Let that magic come from deep within yourself, and let yourself go......be so focused on the scene, that every detail, every curve, every shadow and light is captured to the best of your ability. Be so totally focused, that nothing else exists at that moment except for you and that scene.....

Be so tuned into it, that people can feel and sense the emotions coming from that gaze....

Ahh, I can see it now.........

Hmmm, the way you describe it - it feels really good. Man, and I can see myself going nuts over all the little ringlets in his hair. Malfoy's mane will be a walk in the park in comparison... But the textures of the charcoal silk of the suit, the tinted glasses, the top-hat... Yummers!

Sounds to me like an excellent challenge for your great pencil skills. I can't wait to see what you can come up with!
I think the dressed up scene with Gary Oldman, was the best he ever looked in ANY of his movies. I just wish I was as good looking as he is. Even though he played a creepy dracula in the castle, he appeared like a charming gentleman to the city folks.

Impressive drawing! Beautiful shading, and I love the effect of it on the tinted paper. ^__^ Lucius is nice stuff.... I also love how you didn't feel the need to overwhelm us with details in the background. His face is the most detailed, and therefore draws the eye right to it. Nice artistic decision. Anyways... +fave

I'm not sure there is such a thing as too much Lucius... we really need to find a way to raise that money to make that Lucius movie I think we would just need to dangle a blonde wig and some velvet in front of Jason and he would be right in!

Beautiful work! I was just running a 'lucius' search, being a rabid Isaacs/Malfoy fan meself and your work stood out among the thumbnails I was ogling over perusing. I'm busy working out the rust in my own art skills and I've got practice ahead if I'm to draw as well as this! Keep it up! I'll be watching you, if that's OK.

I sure will. He'll likely keep undergoing change as I get into the swing of drawing, but I have plans for him. Later, of course, I'll do character sheets for the others so he won't always be solo. That would get old fast, I think.

If you have come across the Harry Potter novels by J.K. Rowling about a boy wizard, you might know him (though I know her characters have been given different names by translators of her books). Lucius Malfoy is an evil wizard and father to Draco Malfoy, a bully and generally very unpleasant boy in Harry Potter's year at school.

In the movies based on the books he is played by Jason Isaacs, who mananged to turn a rather ho-hum character into a fabulously compelling and sexy one. (If I may say so...)

Ach, Lucius.

Ellygator In reply to PinkPanthress [2006-02-01 14:30:23 +0000 UTC]

Lach!

So...

Ohgott! (Haben will!!!)
