Description (2007) 5"x 4" for both silver panels, 18" for overall length of the necklace.

Art Clay Silver (cut, sculpted, fired and patinaed), faceted sunstone beads, silver beads, Bali silver, silver findings of dragon heads for the clasp, Fireline

Finally, the piece that eluded me during my last clay working in December! This time the dragon panels came off without any problems and I finally got my necklace just the way I wanted.

You can see the preliminary planning drawing for the piece here. [link] The necklace turned out a little different from the original design as I decided not to use the silver beads but to work with two different sizes of faceted sunstone beads instead. I also added two little dangles at the tail ends of the dragons.

Thank you! That one gave me so much grief, but I'm glad I pushed myself to make it. I learned a lot.

Oh! i will! (when i have some cash!)

btw, is that real silver that u sculpted? I LOVVEE silver and i like the whole dragon theme too. Do u think you could do a horse running, or do u stick to celtic knots?

Ellygator In reply to BlueElCaminoSS [2009-12-03 03:29:49 +0000 UTC]

Yup, it's real silver. In fact it's 999 pure silver, which is even better than 925 Sterling silver. And no, it doesn't have to be Celtic knots. I'd be happy to work on a design that would suit your taste.

Depends on the size more than anything. When I started this hobby 50 grams cost about $50, now they are around $107... Bloody financial crisis. Everyone buys gold and silver!

omg! I had no idea that it had gotten that high! the only time i ever buy silver is a ring or something.

Vassilius In reply to Ellygator [2010-04-24 18:36:37 +0000 UTC]

You should use 925 silver.

I don't think 999 is better for jewellery, and the price is higher.

Your art is beautiful, i'm fond of celtic knots.

If i'm correct : you made a clay model, and then made a "silver casting" ?

Ellygator In reply to Vassilius [2010-04-25 11:57:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! I wish I could take your advice regarding the silver grade (for price and stability), unfortunately I am not working with traditional silver metal but with silver art clay which only comes as pure silver suspended in a clay medium that must be fired after production to become silver. Because of this only pure silver can be used as Sterling would become black and brittle at the firing temperature of 1600F.

None of my pieces are cast. I shape them out of the clay in their basic form and afterward sand and drill them to give them their final shape. After firing I can also add settings for stones or attach wire components.

Absolutely beautiful. I remember seeing this in a sketch so long ago. Amazing to see how it turned out! I love the antiquated texture on the silver.

Dear lords, it's gorgeous. Such intricate details.. I love the combination of the colour of the sunstone beads and the silver. But isn't the silver clay painfully expensive? I heard it was over 35 dollars per 10g (at least in Norway). And you must have used a lot for those dragons.. But I guess you can get at least twice what you paid for the mats if you sell it
Anyway, this is amazing work. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much, and yes, the stuff has really gone up in price, even in the US, though not quite by this much. I started out with a little under $1 per gram and now it is at about $2.10 per gram. You really don't want to waste anything...

netherwings In reply to Ellygator [2009-08-03 15:58:10 +0000 UTC]

I see... Quite expensive. But there is so much beautiful to be made from clay like that, so I guess it's worth it even if it seems like you need a lot of extra equipment too. Heh, the increase in price probably makes many wish they'd bought loads of it before the raise. Anyway, I do find that your gallery is a pleasure to browse, please keep making your beautiful pieces
