Description Pippin's song from the third LotR movie in Sindarin (gondorian script), because I love it so much and I was bored

Was nice to do some calligraphy again. You can see where my hand started to cramp because I'm no longer used to writing. Like it, though.

How did you learn Sindarin?

Love it!

I have a dictionary/grammar book, inherited from my brother. I used that for most of the grammar, and what vocabulary I couldn't find there is from the internet, namely here: [link] It's German, but I'm sure a similar thing exists for English (I know there's for Quenya, even though I don't have the link handy, sorry).

This is beautiful... I think the real one is even better than this scan.
After starting with calligraphy again, I have realized how difficult it is to make all letters have the same seize.
I don't want to know how long it took you to translate this...

first: nice to see you here
second: I didn't really think about making them all the same size... And translating was maybe an hour or so. the hardest thing was getting the right form of the words, as I just can't get all this stuff in my head.

Wooooooow.

I hate to admit that I really don't know Sindarin that much at all, but from what I've studied, a few of your words, I can't find anywhere. Calligraphy-wise, it looks ABSOLUTELY AMAZING and I'm jealous because I'm not sure I could do anything anywhere near close in quality to that.

...I should really learn REAL calligraphy... hm...

Do you think that, by any chance, you could write it down in ...regular... letters, so I can see exactly what it says and compare? I feel stupid XD

Elveanna In reply to snurtz [2009-05-15 22:18:34 +0000 UTC]

Err, thanks... that's a huge compliment, you know...

god, where have I left that paper... I feel stupid, too. Did that two weeks ago and now I don't know where it is xD

It's some kind of strange gondorian script... the only Sindarin script that uses tehtar that's in my books. And the words are mostly from a online Sindarin dictionary - and one is quenya. Because I didn't find it, but it was important. "Until", I think.
I don't think you're worse in doing calligraphy, you're just doing other crazy things like writing whole pages of it I would die if I had to do that!

Do you use fancy calligraphy pens, like the kind you have to load the nib yourself and everything with? (Because I just bought some and I can't figure them out )

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Elveanna In reply to snurtz [2009-05-27 17:36:06 +0000 UTC]

I have some where you can change the nib and you have to load it with ink from a bottle. Plus one pen with a ink cartridge and one with a real feather, but that one makes just a huge mess. And some of the nibloading ones, too...

doesn't look like the original translation exists any more... was just on the back of some school paper. So I'll try and do it the other way round:

Home (is) behind, the world ahead
bar adel i-amar no (somehow the space between the last ones got lost in the calligraphy)

and there (are) many paths to tread
ah nar arnediad rad neledhรฎa

through shadow to the edge of night
ter dhaedeloth na i-dhรป

until the stars are all alight
tenn i-gigiath pan echuiannen

distant shadows, cloud and shade
hae daedeloth faun ar gwath

all shall fade, all shall fade
pan thinnatha pan thinnatha

so... doesn't sound too bad, does it? The forms of "be" are left out, the times are in the verbs and there are two different shadows: "Daedeloth" is shadow of fear and "gwath" just darkness caused by light (might as well be grey, like in "gwathlo". Just came to my mind.). I think. The dictionary said that

I'll take that as a compliment
Should I remind you that we do some absolutely crazy stuff called "writing a novel" as often as we can?^^

True? Oh yes I remember! You're right. WE are crazy! But thats good!

What would the world be like without some crazy people... no fun at all, I think. And we're the ones who keep the fun going, isn't that great?

It's rather odd. Me and my friend were just talking about that song XD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Elveanna In reply to ItachiTheDekuScrub [2009-05-02 20:48:03 +0000 UTC]

Did you watch it or just out of the moment?

It's one of my favourite scenes in the Return of the King, they did a great job there.
And as usual, the original is way better than the german version

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

ItachiTheDekuScrub In reply to Elveanna [2009-05-02 20:50:46 +0000 UTC]

We were just talking about it and listening to it XD

Yes, I agree it is one of the best scenes, yet also a sad one.

Elveanna In reply to ItachiTheDekuScrub [2009-05-02 21:24:04 +0000 UTC]

now that's really odd

Absolutely. It could have been just like this in the book
