Description
While not quite as prestigious or glorious as the Dart Class or the Ferrum, the Pilum is a well known and well respected vessel of the Union Navy Core. Designed as a battlecruiser the ship mounts extremely heavy drive systems for its size and its acceleration is totally unmatched by any mainline vessel. Able to completely out accelerate any smaller or larger ship the Pilum therefore has total control over the battlefield, running down smaller craft or fleeing capital ships. This has made the Pilum the go to capital ship for peacetime operations, where its speed, heavy firepower and light defences can be capitalised on the most when dealing with pirates or other unknown contacts. Equipped with a heavy armament of Gravitic Accelerators and a spinal HFL supplemented by 4 QAC cannons and Spearhead drones the Pilum can engage the heaviest targets at all ranges, but it excels in closer knife fights where it can bring its lighter mass drivers and plasma cannons into the fray. Crippling a target using its HFL, QACs and Missiles the battlecruiser can swiftly dispatch the target up close which has led to many captains of this class being fairly aggressive in their approach. Being a battlecruiser the Pilum has sacrificed its battleship grade protection, mounting much lighter armour than even the Dart it relies on its speed and shield ADS systems to protect it. This typically regulates Pilums to asymmetric engagements or much more flank orientated attacks in fleet engagements where its lack of protection can be mitigated by tactical advantages. Performing very well during the Draken war where its heavy weapons and speed kept it ironically alive longer than some battleships the Pilums role has been reprised and upgraded in the new Horizon fleet where so far its capabilities have shined during the battles and peace times that had followed.
