All fleets need logistics, and the Union is no exception. Even in times of peace machines break down, specialist parts are needed and heavy repairs have to be undertaken, this swells exponentially during combat where damage wracks up. While some armour plates and minor repairs can be undertaken in the field much more specialist equipment, parts and repairs must be done under careful eyes, with the right tools and completed to the right specification. The Quartermaster is the Unions Factory Ship, jointly run by the Navy Core & Logistics Core the vessel is large, with much of its internal space taken up by power generation, resource bunkers and massive automated factories capable of manufacturing specialist parts for Union ships, from Accelerator barrels to entire FTL drives. Of course the complexity of a part increases production time, as does available resources (or lack thereof) but many Quartermasters carry supplies of ready to use everyday parts in large hangars ready to shuttle across to other vessels along with dedicated engineering teams. Very lightly armed for only self defence and interception against incoming attacks the Quartermaster is never designed to operate on the frontline, only behind it, or under extremely heavy escort. While well defended the vessel is little more than a sitting duck, its use in supporting the Unions fleets far too valuable to ever allow it to be thrown into direct confrontation. Such vessels are also used to support humanitarian efforts or small colonies where the Quartermasters factories can come in handy for providing large amounts of production to supplement the planet or stationside inhabitants. These vessels are a common sight across the galaxy, and while not as flashy or dreamy as the true warships are a workhorse of the entire Union of Worlds.
