We ping them cause jpgs don't accurately represent the image (jpegs are for photos and photo-like art, but are "lossy"). And some web browsers will color correct .png files that have profiles in them to look as accurate as possible on whatever monitor it is being viewed on.
But you should be able to use a .png as a desktop pic... what OS are you using?

yes, it turns out i can save and use png images with my new vista system. and i think because i have adobe photoshop cs3 just installed.
i had an xp system on my other computer and i couldnt save and view png images. they just showed up as blank.
i guess i should have tried, before i spoke, eh?

um, I saw this as a DD, and was just wondering;
How did you create such a masterpiece? What sort of programs and whether or not you used a tablet ect

Yes, I did use a tablet (an old intuos2) and drew it in Illustrator. It is mostly made of shapes that have basic gradients. It may look really complicated, but it is really just a whole lot of small simple objects mixed together.

Not only is this well-executed and enormously creative, it's also very evocative. Looking at this fills me with nostalgia for things I don't even think I actually know of. Creeating that level of immersion is one of the marks of a great picture.
