It's funny that you've come up with that idea! Do you know they used to do something similar in roman sculpture? (don't believe me? look here: [link] ) Well, except for the "avert apocalypse" button of course.
Most hair buns on the roman female portraits are "prosthetics", they just glued them on the statue's head. It was cheaper that way, they didn't have to waste a lot of marble, just for the protruding hair!
