Oh. This is complicated. Humanity in Wh40k hates mutants because they think the mutation is a sign of literal corruption of the soul. And really often that is true and mutants are worshipping daemons and killing normal humans. But there are a lot of sources of mutation besides daemonic influence. But humans prefer to avoid the risks and mark all mutants as dangerous. Humanity has a meaning to check for mutation and this is called "purity tests". They take some blood of the person and check it for any abnormalities or signs of mutation. The positive result of test means the person is pure human with no deviations from the norm. The negative result means the person is a mutant of some kind and they most likely will be killed or sent to labor camps where mutants work to repay their sin of being mutants. But the test itself is costly and humanity is innumerable and nobody is able to check every human for mutation so there are a lot of secret mutants out there who are hiding their mutations from the authorities.
Inquisitor of this group is a radical. She thinks she must use every advantage or weapon she has as long as it allows her to defeat greater evils. Because of that she actively uses mutants. Whenever someone of her agents mutates because of the constant exposure to the profane and daemonic, she just informs them of the fact and advises to avoid purity tests in the future. Zel was recruited when he was pure human but the constant exposure to Daemons, Warp energies, and sorcerous rituals twisted his body. He mutated and his eyes changed into something else allowing him to see the shadows beyond. Practically he became blind AND got the ability to see through the walls in the limited range. He installed himself an eye implant that allowed him to see as a normal human again. The left eye still remains where it was, allowing him to see through the walls. Miranda encountered a really clever heretic whos blasphemous words and sorcery twisted her soul. The works of the heretic are masterful so even Miranda's Inquisitor still don't know about it yet. Okus was transferred to another body and to allow him to be alive this body was changed via technology. He isn't a mutant but he's not pure anymore.

Oh this is insanely cool, thanks for all this information! With so much tension between pure humans and mutants, the various races and factions, etc, I imagine there's a lot of grey morality going on here. Radical Inquisitors... born-again post-mutants... forbidden knowledge... they're a ragtag group, for sure. What's the general climate of this team, ie how do they get along and behave in-world? I'm especially curious to know how Zel is as a leader, he strikes me as being very rough on the others.

After I kicked the problematic player I'd say the characters are respectful of each other. Everyone does what they can do, help whenever they can, and don't cause much problems to each other.
The group is too free-thinking for their own good. Sometimes the authority given by their Inquisitor is the only thing keeping them alive. The Imperium's society is really stagnant and fanatical. Good for them their Inquisitor is a free-thinking individual herself and she approves such mentality and tends to recruit such people into service.
Zel is just a warrior. Rude and straightforward person. But he's also pragmatic and purposeful. A team member suggested him to become a leader because he'll be "a resolute leader". And so he is. His duty is to get the mission complete and ensure the highest possible survival rating. Though after the fight where half of the group decided to join the pirates and the other half was loyal to the Inquisitor (he tried to take traitors alive for the trial but they killed themselves when it was evident that they lost) he announced that he'll execute anyone under his charge the moment they disobey his order. There was no disobedience since. His command style is to listen for everyone's opinions and make decisions after that based on their expertise and his own experience. Everyone seems fine with that. Sicilia's player once commented his roughness with "the commander we deserved".

Haha yeah, I see what Sicilia's player meant! With a dog-eat-dog universe and such a free-thinking group dynamic, that pillar of authority is what they need most. A very interesting group of characters, I really like them! Which of them do you play?

I'm the GM and Zel is GMPC. I know that many scorns on this concept but at one point I wanted to remove him from play and my players asked me to leave him in the group, so I guess I'm doing it kinda right. Never wanted for him to be the formal leader tho, but when there was a vote he was unconscious and was unable to voice his protest. Miranda refused to remain the leader because of the critical lack of discipline and other candidates were even worse than Zel. So, for now, I'm playing the leader of the group of my own players... it feels strange

Seems about right. He loves his grenade launcher and always grumbling about Zel, Miranda, and Mordikai always running into melee before he can blow something up with it

Damitri and Zel... "Hell Razors" XD
Well Damitri is a walking armoury and his... Pet "Cyber Hound" is on par with Thunder wolves of the Vulka Fenreka but has a Six/Twelve on its back so yep they could definitely screw something over.

Zel is not a walking armoury but he has good melee weapons and he knows how to use them. Also, his cybermastiff (he has one too lol) is so heavily modified it can eat space marines now. A team like that sounds really dangerous XD
