Description Drew this during my "Sacred Texts of Asia" class during the phase on Hinduism, copying the pose and the style of dress from a Sanskrit copy of the Bhagavad-Gita.

"Sri Shanti" (written at the bottom of the drawing) is a rough translation of "Serenity-sama". (The teacher spoke Sanskrit. Needless to say, it was a pretty cool class.)

WOW... I want that class. >_>

I think it's awesome how her countenance bares a close resemblance to the subjects of the artwork of that time period (from what I've seen, that is). Again, awesome job. *_*

An original take on a well-used Character, very nice!

I've always thought that the Arabian styles and such were beautiful. The styles combine nicely, although the dress itself appears more Egyptian.

Very nice!

Well, er, the whole thing's Indian. But I can see how the part adapted from the original Serenity dress has an Egyptian feel with all the detail added.

Needs moar arms. Or heads. Otherwise, it's very good. Her face is a little long (imho) but it's gewd.

Krishna (on whom this is based) actually has the normal number of limbs and heads - and they're all human, no less. He's usually drawn with blue skin, but other than that, he's really quite normal

Krshna being the one who appeared to the random warrior caste dude, correct. If so, I distinctly remember seeing illustrations from the Bhagavad-Gita that show him with the several heads.

In his "true" form he is infinite, with countless variations. Usually he appeared to people, including the "warrior caste dude", in a normal human form in order to avoid blowing their minds.

Sailor Moon as a Hindu deity is a very neat mix! Makes me wonder who would be Kali (Saturn, perhaps?).

If I recall correctly, the Starlights were based on the trio of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva: creator (Maker), destroyer (Fighter), and preserver (Healer). So you should try drawing them in this style!

Kali as Saturn sounds very fitting.

The Starlights weren't based on those; they just happen to fit the mythology very nicely.

I think another possible origin that's been suggested is the "san hikari / three lights" of Shintoism, with the Stars, Sun, and Moon. Or maybe Naoko just said, "Oooo! I feel like black leather bikinis!"

It's still a good reason to draw the Starlights as Hindu figures. I'm curious what your Seiya / StarFighter would look like, especially since you do androgyny well.

And then you could have Sri Shanti Usagi and Shiva Seiya cuddling in a cutesy manner like one of Sayuri-P's drawings! [link]

(That would make Usagi into Parvati, Shiva's consort. This is highly appropriate, since Parvati partly symbolizes fertility, which meshes well with Moon-related symbolism.)

not sure. something about the combination of anime and zen. It just seems like the universe would implode into a tiny pink rabbit

Well, er, it's Hinduism, not Buddhism, so Zen has nothing to do with it.

We watched the start of an anime version of the Ramayana (a Hindu epic, known to everyone in India and several other countries) in class. Rama, the hero, worked surprisingly well as an old-school bishounen

Woah. The infusion of culture here isn't something I have a very firm grasp of intellectually, but I can see it in the details. I'm really fond of how the costume design still feels authentic to Serenity while obviously being informed by the sacred text.

Can't say I know much about the culture (as it relates to the clothing) either; I was working on visuals alone. (Which is why her hands are too big; my model was male.) I'm glad it still feels like Serenity; her design is "streamlined, simple, and white" while the Hindu gods go around in "layered, detailed, and colorful", so it was an unusual combination to say the least
