Description Shade versus Goth in the Vampyrum Spectrum's pyramid in the book Sunwing, during the eclipse. Shade is a badass, of course, so he uses sound to turn himself into a vulture against Goth's echolocation. Other protagonists just do what, lob scimitars at people?

Inks with brush and PITT & Sakura microns.

hah, It's cool how you point out the colour thing, because I caught a color mentioned once in Sunwing. Still, it's impressive that he caught as many as he did.
I love your picture, I haven't seen any other drawings of this scene. good job making the vulture come out of Shade's echoes, I recognized it right away.

Aw thanks! I'm glad you like it, I was disappointed by the lack of meaningful Silverwing fanart, especially considering how much art potential the book has! So I tried this Thanks again!

Yes, I agree! It might be that bats are pretty hard to draw, and a lot of art I've seen is for the TV seriese instead, because those bats are quite a bit easier to draw...
You're welcome

Don't knock it, I loe the inkwork and the effects you've added to portray the echoes and the darkness.

Actually, it's pretty interesting. Turns out bats don't see in greys, at least not several that have been studied recently. They have a few issues, but it's not completely black-and-white when it's light out.

Thank you!

I did hesitate over the colour blindness bit because I wasn't too sure. I thought it varied by species? Wikipedia verifies that some see UV light. But Shade is a silver-haired bat and I'm honestly not sure what their vision is.

Have you read Sunwing? I'm only asking because the main events of the book deal with the bat bombs of WWII and though it's horrible, it's also interesting.

I did, though I found Darkwing to be more a good example of Oppel's progress as a story-teller. Sunwing was an alright sequel to Silverwing, and Firewing got downright departing from reality, but Darkwing was excellent. I'd say read up on the actual experiments that occurred. He may not understand jack about evolution, and his writing about bats may be inaccurate at times, but that guy can do story-telling.

As for your pic, it's in the dark, so greyscale isn't strange at all. Heck, most of my dark images are literally blasted with color. Who am I to speak of accuracy for artistic needs? It's why I don't want to nitpick Oppel's mistakes while reading, but they still jump out at me. I want to get lost in the story, and it's supposed to be fantasy, despite the realistic creatures and places in the first two books.

Really? Well then I know a lot less about bats than I'd like, so I guess my ignorance made me a contented reader. I don't recall any mistakes; I read Darkwing so long ago I honestly can't remember much about it, or at least none of the flaws jumped out at me. (I admit Firewing was surreal but I absolutely loved it, I teared up at the end haha.) I wish I knew enough to catch the mistakes though.

But thank you for your kind words!

Not at all! It's a really great piece, and I love the texturing you gave to the fur most of all. You didn't just do a cartooney rendering, you show you read them with the understanding that the stories were to portray real animals in all their detail. This pays homage to the particular story, for sure.

Aw, thank you. I did make an effort to not draw them in a cartoon style and I'm glad others appreciate that.
