Description On the afternoon of October 26, 1963, Nickel Plate Passenger train #5, the City of Chicago, from Buffalo NY to Chicago IL speeds through the Diamond outside of Hammond IN. The train was running over 2 hours & 40 minutes behind schedule as it races towards it's next stop in Hammond. Leading the train is a lone GP9 built for passenger service while most Geeps were built for freight service. At the time, the train was only 2 years away from making it's last run as the decline of Passenger train travel only got worse. Before that, the consist would usually be an RPO Car, a Coach, a DB-Cafe-Lounge, a 5BDRM Dorm Lounge, & a PS106 Sleeper. Through service with the Lackawanna to Hoboken ended 4 years prior. The NKP ordered 58 GP9's to replace the iconic Berkshires in revenue service. Several were built for passenger service to accompany the PA-1's. These units would continue into the N&W Merger until retirement. Some of unit's were sold to Shortlines & some were preserved. The train would arrive in the Windy City, that night.
