Description Filter feeders, distantly related to the predators I just recently posted, though their back fins have evolved to have a membrane that acts much the way a squid or cuttle fish fin does. They are propelled mainly by their rear flippers. The boney plating is not as heavy and thick in these species than the active predators.

Oh wow, they sort of do. I assure you this is pure coincidence, I have not actually seen this particular piece by you (I really like it). I apologize for any similarities, if you feel they are too similar I will certainly change up the look a little (which I might have done anyway, I still sort of feel like my "whales" are a little too whale and not enough alien).

The double fin look came from the fact that most animals on Skatha have 6 limbs, the notch in the fin comes from the same sort of thing that happens in your piece as well, just little bits of left overs from when the fin was a leg (the notch actually is meant to show where the two sets of fingers were, as their evolutionary ancestors had chameleon or koala like toes)

Well, both our worlds have fauna that are largely hexapedal (more primitive fauna have more, with the most being seen are six pairs of limbs in animals like the Lensangs). The Agamarin's six legs have each become flippers, with the anterior and median pair becoming the fore and aft flippers and the the posterior limbs becoming the flukes of the tail (actually this implies the absence of an actual tail, meaning the entire length of the animal is predominantly thorax).

Even though the bodies are very close, the heads are completely different. I'm really not that worried about it (startled at first, but this whole thing really is just pure coincidence.)

I think when it comes to certain types of creatures (such as alien whales) there is bond to be some overlap, but I certainly didn't mean to copy your species in anyway.

Alright, glad we could go about this peacefully haha, I've seen some ridiculous outbursts happen over someone's creature or design looking too much like someone else's.

Cooool! Filter feeders are always so interesting. Mind-boggling that something as large as a Basking Shark could survive one a diet completely made up by single-celled organisms.

Going to start working on some large "aeoloplankton" The word is something I came up with last year, don't know if it is a word or not already, haven't found it yet, but it means "wind plankton" or "air plankton."

I must say your originality surprises me. These creatures are a perfect mix of familiar and totally alien!
I'm not a huge fan on xenobiology, but your project is getting me hooked. Keep up the good work!

They remind me of Yeerks (a fictional, sluglike alien species from "Animorphs").

I can't actually believe I waited! I waited just to see them! And I must say I love these whales in just about every possible way! I love the varying head shape, I love how the lower jaws work, I love the "cuttlefish tails" and I love that they each are portrayed in a different pose. Fascinating and fantastic!

They are all pretty interesting.

The top one's head kinda looks like a Chameleons. The second from the bottom also has a pretty interesting head design

exo-bio In reply to NotXRAY0128 [2012-04-07 23:43:38 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, I imagined that for some species (there are more than are just depicted here) that a "breathing crest" could have evolved on the top of the head. Making it even easier to breath from under water, also they could basically "snorkel" while resting.
