Description Speculative male Therizinosaur display used as a mating show to attract females as well as to intimidate rival males. The Therizinosaur will inflate the neck pouch, much like modern day frigate bird, while "singing" deep grunting sounds to his potential mate. Once he has her full attention he will begin to shake his flamboyant crest and "clap" his massive claws together, creating a loud clacking noise. While this display is considered sexy by the females, it can be very frightening to younger males or overconfident predators.

I just can't imagine a Therizino like this doing... This. But with smaller, avian dinosaurs, or even pterosaurs... It might fit better. Just sayin. Otherwise, great piece, very creative.

Ha, I could see Tyrannosaurs doing ridiculous displays like this. I don't think size matters that much, except when it comes to physical limitations. What makes you think that only small avian dinosaurs would do interesting displays?

I don't know. It just doesn't seem fit in my mind. But now you've said it, it doesn't look that implausible at all.Β

Quite a display! I like this piece; really makes you think about what these amazing creatures were like when they still lived.

A friend of mine just put out a book called "All Yesterdays" specifically about being more liberal in your paleo-interpretations - and they're doing an art contest you might want to submit this to (just for fun). [link]
It'd be right up their alley...

I actually did this for that very contest, I am going to send it in now. I wanted to do another piece for the contest as well, though I fear I'm out of time unless I whip something together tonight.

They extended the deadline to march 10th, actually, so you might be fine.
THis therizinosaur is awesome, though - what would your other critter be?

Oh they did? Awesome! Today is my day off so I will devote it to paleoart. And thank you, I'm glad you like him

I was working on a piece involving some sauropods, ceratopsians, and hadrosaurs in a herd. I was trying to display how herds may have aligned themselves with the magnetic field and faced north the way modern herd animals do. Though it just sort of looked like an air-view of a bunch of dinos. It was more the concept in words that made it speculative. I'm going to work on some pterosaurs right now.

P.s. got comicon tickets for tomorrow

Nice - it's always good to hear of good paleoart getting made - especially when you're exploring ideas like that.

ps see you then!

I'm always excited to see speculative evolution art being made, I'm thinking about starting up a post-human project. Those are always fun.

How much practice have you had with a drawing tablet? You're incredibly good, btw i got the ME art book and need less to say its helped my alien art block im working on humanoid aliens at the moment been using my face as a model and then painting over it on DA muro i need photo shop sooo bad lol is photoshop what you use?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

exo-bio In reply to OblivionJunkey94 [2013-01-13 06:48:37 +0000 UTC]

I never really "practiced" with a tablet, I just started drawing with one and taught myself things through either figuring it out myself, my mom giving me pointers, or tutorials and process videos. And yes, photoshop is what I use.

CS5 I started out on Photoshop 9, but I was pretty little then, most of my practice has been on CS2, CS5 made certain painting techniques much easier. Blending was easier I found.

I know I'd run if I saw something with claws that huge and a giant bloated heart pouch. I can just imagine the horrible (to a human of course; I bet the ladies dig it XD) battle cry that thing must make before it rips you to shreds.
