There's a lot to comics involving subtle, subconscious ways of pushing the narrative. You can tell a story via panels alone. That's why I actually figure out the paneling and structure of a page before I go in and draw anything. It's more than just fitting in the appropriate drawing. It's about how I can make the whole piece into one cohesive, story telling unit.

Yes. In the previous comic, you can see he has asymmetrical eyes. One looks especially large, though this is really just due to lack of eyelids on the one side.

I don't doubt he picked the word up without thinking on its appropriateness. Overly fancy language throwing around is very much what people in the region do.
