[Aragorn]: Legolas, when I relied on your elf eyes, I was hopeful that you would provide us with things we don't know. * sighs * At least you know how to use a bow and arrows...Rumors have it that Legolas always states the obvious. Makes me wonder, aside of his warrior skills, if there was really something that made him stand out on his own. I mean, do we REALLY need elf eyes to see what absolutely anyone with mortal sight can see? This strip has been triggered by a youtube clip I saw.

I have two theories about Legolas' Captain Obvious state:
1)Legolas has previously encountered mortals who were dumb as f*ck and therefore now feels the need to to state the most obvious facts because he thinks mortals are born stupid
2)This is quite sad... when Thranduil was attacked by the dragon, he was blinded for a while and therefore Legolas needed to be his eyes. That's where we get the 'Red sun rises' wisedoms; he needed to describe everything to his father and help him cling to life

Every story has their stereotypes. Be it heroes, villains, heroines, bad-ass sidekicks or comic relief.
But, every story must, and I repeat, MUST have their own 'inspector-state-the-flaming-obvious'. It is essential part of any story and thankfully, Legolas was able to fill that role (and the bad-ass sidekick).
