I have nothing to put up in the main gallery (and won't for a while! lol!), so I wanted to share what I have done on the gift piece I'm working on--now don't everyone faint: it ISN'T Star Wars!
My husband is a big fan of the late great guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn, so I'm doing a portrait of Stevie for him. I'm trying NOT to use blenders or smudging on this piece, as the b/w photo I'm referencing has some wonderful, rough grain, and it adds, I think, to the atmosphere--so, a more textured paper and lots and lots of tiny strokes. I think it's coming along alright...though I'm dreading the peacock tattoo on his chest and the filligreed crucifix he's wearing...

Thank you! I was a little concerned about not blending this piece (I use blending and smudging on almost every drawing I do)--it's requiring a very careful eye to keep all the shading consistent without it. But the reference photo has a lovely "feel," with its grainy quality--I thought I'd see how that worked out in the drawing. Hopefully--I can make it work! I appreciate the feedback--thanks!

I do not know this subject of yours but I'd like to say this looks like a great piece. I like the job you already did on his hat. It really looks like the brim of the hat is much closer to our eyes than his face. Your husband, and other fans of this man are in for a treat! You should do more close-up shot portrait!

Stevie Ray Vaughn was a revolutionary musician who brought "blues rock" to the forefront of popular music--his solo guitar techniques were unique and fantastic, and are still much studied and copied by guitarists today (he died in a helicopter crash in 1990).
I could have done a picture with him holding "Old Number One," his first and most beloved Fender Stratocaster guitar...but that instrument was so worn, battered, scuffed and scratched...I dreaded trying to draw all of that!

So far I think it looks great. I think you will do well with tattoo. the decoration on the hat looks amazing and hard. How much harder could the Tattoo be? good luck with it can't wait to see it when your done.

Yeah--I figured this would ruffle a few feathers, not being a SW piece! lol! But the SW pieces I have in progress now are so far from even being WIPs that I felt I needed to get SOMEthing up--this was the nearest to being done, so here it is! I HOPE I can do that tattoo...it's really going to ruin the drawing if I muff it up!

Hee! It's hard not to appreciate those phenomenal blues licks once you hear them--awesome stuff!

This is looking absolutly wonderful FF I would love to have your talent the hat looks awesome and the little bit background that shows looks fantastic, really looking forward to seeing more of this

Many thanks my friend! I'm so glad the hat looks okay--those medallions stymied me for a long while, trying to figure out how to shade them in properly! And that background is a stone wall he's standing against (the photo was taken just before a concert he gave in NY's Central Park)--it's pretty challenging to draw in, too! I very much appreciate your observations and kind words--thanks so much!

Aw, thanks! I like Stevie, too--who wouldn't admire the talent the man had? I appreciate you taking time to look at a WIP--hopefully I'll have it done sometime soon (and BEFORE hubby's birthday! :worried:
