FalconFan β€” 'Unacceptable Losses' Han

Description Another illustration from the SW "Legacy of the Force" series--I set this one somewhere between Tempest and Exile, where Han and Leia Solo have narrowly escaped the deadly turbolaser assault by their son Jacen's Star Destroyer; I can't imagine how devastating such a thing would be for parents, to be targeted for death by their only son... I had an image of Han, sitting alone on the 'Falcon's flightdeck, and trying to come to grips with this latest "loss"...

There are truckloads of inaccuracies in the cockpit--I had a terrible time locating any references, and virtually none were from this particular angle; so I ended up "winging" most all of it... My apologies to the "fleet junkies" whose sensibilities might be offended!

Mechanical and classic graphite pencils, 2H, H, HB, 2B, 3B, 4B on Bristol board; contrast correction in the computer.

George Lucas owns SW, Han Solo and the Millenium Falcon.

I have not read LotF. This portrait, however, drew me in because it still works for theΒ  present day. Just the other day, we saw Carrie Fisher's collection on GMA because her family will soon need to put items up for auction. That got me thinking--again--about Carrie's passing.

And then I came across this portrait.

It makes me cry, but I love you for having done it.

I featured this piece in May the 4th Be With You event so hope it gets added to the fan art collection. Β The detail is absolutely stunning and I love the facial expression. Β So deep in thought. Β Represents his character very well!!!

Han's facial expression when reacting to the same thing in Episode 7 is even more heartbreaking.Β

Thank you for taking a look here, and for the comment...yeah.Β  TFA.Β  I stillΒ  sort of think Ford made the screenwriters put in Solo's death because his participation in the film was conditional on that event: he wanted Han Solo to die in ROTJ, but that didn't happen.Β  It might have been part of his price for appearing in TFA--to make sure the character died as he'd requested before.Β  Just my two cents on that.Β

I appreciate your visit and comments--thank you so much!

I feel so horrible for the Solos and hate the horrible things that EU has done to them. Basically EU has gotten irrevocably stupid in my opinion. All that being said, I love this picture. You captured the character of Han and the emotion in the scene. Fantastic work.

FalconFan In reply to Marvelous-Things [2013-09-27 18:29:55 +0000 UTC]

I completely agree that the Solos took way too much bad stuff in the EU...far more than their "share," if you want to look at doling it out equally among characters... I do like young Ben Skywalker, though, which I suppose is the only reason I keep reading the EU books--to see what happens with him. Thanks much for taking time to comment and for the for this--I appreciate it a lot!

Thank you--and yes: it would have been a dreadful blow for Han and Leia...but perhaps not as hard as losing Anakin... It would have to be devastating, though: to have your only remaining son doing his level best to kill you; even the unflappable Han Solo would have to be affected by that. Thanks for taking a look, and for ing it!

Aww, thank you! It's not truly an illustration, as it has no actual written scene--it's something I "inferred" from the narrative, imagined in the hours after the scene described in the book... I very much appreciate your kind words, however--you're very generous! **bows**

Thank you so much for looking! "Legacy of the Force" is a series of novels set far after the final film "Return of the Jedi;" lots of dark things happen to our beloved Skywalker/Solo family, and this was intended to portray how hard it was, even for Han Solo, to bear some of those events. I'm glad you like it, even if the context is foreign; thanks for the kind words, and especially for the !

I have a few of the books in that series, but after learning what happens, I will not read them. I'm so tired of 'dark' things always happening. I prefer the good ol' days when they were young and GOOD. I hate this idea of Anakin going evil. Drive me insane.

However, on a lighter note, I love your pencil work here. This is the one place where I lack big time. It's hard for me to see detail in black and white. I do SOO much better with color.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FalconFan In reply to equigoyle [2011-11-19 01:29:49 +0000 UTC]

You are not alone in avoiding the later EU--and yes, far too many "dark things" happened... Some of the books were well-written, though, the dismal story arcs notwithstanding.

I'm glad you like the drawing, though--much appreciation for the kind words and for the , too! Don't give up on pencils--just pick some up and start filling a tablet--you'll find your skill with them improves dramatically the more you draw!

Thanks again!

Thanks--this was for a moderator at another site, drawing Han from the LOTF era...and he and his family went through SO much in those books... I figured a more private, human moment, rather than one of his typical brash-heroic moments might be more effective. I'm so glad you like this, and very much appreciate the for it, too!

"I am not aware of the newest SW series that much"

Many original and movie SW fans are not, so you're certainly not alone; there have been a lot of novels written that carry the galaxy far, far away forward from Return of the Jedi, developing the characters' lives and events in the galaxy. The story from which this scene was derived is but one of those novels. I'm so glad the emotion comes through to you here--that was the intent. Thank you for the visit and comments, and also for the added !
