Description I've been itching to draw more of Nubia, so this was an illustration featuring my version of her as she appears in my DC Universe head canon.

My take on Nubia depicts her as the magical child of Queen Hippolyta and General Phillippus. She is the second in line to the throne of Themyscira and is one of the Amazons' foremost scientists. When her older sister Diana left the island to fight for truth and justice in Man's World as Wonder Woman, Nubia was among the Amazons sent with her as part of her ambassadorial envoy. Like Diana, Nubia took up arms and became a superheroine. She is equipped with the powerful daggers of Sekhmet, the shield of Hathor, and the healing lasso of Isis, all gifts from her mother Phillippus. Nubia also possesses the "Stone Sight," the magical ability to turn others to stone, which she inherited after a battle with the Gorgon sisters.

While Diana is emotional and leads with her heart, Nubia is purely logical. She has a scientific mind and must analyze situations before acting. Though she is patient, she has a no-nonsense attitude that makes her far more critical than her sister.Β

Design-wise, Nubia more or less identical to how I'd drawn her for my Wonder Woman: The Animated Series concept (seen here:Β fav.me/dbbki1i ).

As always, I love hearing from you all so please feel free to leave your thoughts below. Also, let me know if you'd like me to draw more portraits of the Justice League members from my head canon.

Enjoy!

We need more Nubia. We seriously do. #BringBackNubia has been my favourite on Twitter for a while now, and for good reason.

It doesn't hurt that you make her look so damn good in Β everything. But I especially love the pose here. It's dynamic and would fit so well on a cover.

Thank you! The pose is actually referenced from an Alex Ross piece of Wonder Woman.

The lack of attention paid to Nubia by DC Comics shows how out of touch they are with potential fans. There's been so much great Nubia art done and there's an audience eager for more of her. But what do we get? More of Diana's brother that NO ONE wants.

I love Alex Ross' art so that makes me even happier.

Seriously though! She already has two sisters, Donna AND Nubia, and DC just keeps giving them the shaft at every possible turn. It's awful honestly. Clearly if they listened just once they might do something we would enjoy, but then again, they're probably too busy working on an event that is literally 30+ Batmen.

I have my own criticisms regarding Alex Ross' work, but the pose was what I was looking for.

There's definitely a disconnect between those who call the shots and the (potential) consumers. I don't particularly think that DC Comics actually acknowledges or accepts that Wonder Woman has fans and that they have their own thoughts and feelings regarding the direction she should be taken in. I also think that since the company appears to be overly white, overly male, and overly straight, I don't think that they pay attention to Black Twitter or to queer voices. If they did, Nubia would likely be one of the most prominent characters in the Wonder Woman mythos.

That's easy to see if you just look at their reaction to Wonder Woman's success being... literally nothing. It's almost like they didn't expect the movie to be as successful as it was, and instead of playing catch up to cash in on it, they're siting around like "Whatever, let's make a Joker movie". It's frustrating, confusing, and embarrassing. Painfully so in all three instances.

To be fair, I think that the DCEU and Warner Brothers are plagued by a lot of rumours that have really caused a lot of confusion amongst audiences. There's precious little that is actually confirmed when it comes to films that are actually in progress. Unfortunately, they do seem to be largely Bat-heavy.

That said, it's true that there seems to be no concerted effort to actually build on the success of Wonder Woman. It's almost as if they see it as a fluke. By now, we'd have already seen an animated series announced along with a whole slew of Wonder Woman merchandising as its own franchise. But we don't. The only indication that they've acknowledged her success is in the way that Wonder Woman has become the focal point of the Justice League. It also seems like Gal may be the face of the Justice League promotion as well, considering she's already appearing on SNL as a host.

The fact that DC hasn't is extremely disappointing, and on their part it is also extremely short-sighted. Wonder Woman was a resounding success, much more so than many other movies in the same genre. It's also extremely important to a wider audience, because it is helping to resonate ore with them. Having a big female-led superhero film is important to a lot of girls. It's importance to them alone should designate why it needs more exposure and attention shed on it. It entirely does look like DC is viewing it like a fluke, and it's disappointing. Wonder Woman as a character and series could open the door to so many other characters and stories. But DC doesn't seem to want to do that sadly.

Gal being the face of the promotion is at least a step in the right direction. Still wish we would see something more come of it though.

I suspect DC Superhero Girls poses a bit of a problem in that it's wildly successful and taps into the same market a Wonder Woman exclusive franchise would. Seeing as Diana is the main character of that series, I can imagine them thinking they've got the market covered already. Obviously the issue is that the regular comic bro disregards that franchise since it doesn't cater to them.

Of course, that doesn't excuse why the other projects they've got in the works aren't tailored to make Wonder Woman's family the stars. Young Justice only seems to be including Cassie, Donna is nowhere to be seen in the news about the Titans show, and all of the upcoming animated films seem to be lacking anything Wonder Woman-centric.

The only alterations They seem to have made were adding more with the Amazons for the Justice League film and including Gal in Flashpoint. The latter I think is a SEVERE mistake if they're following the source text. A soulless, heartless Wonder Woman is going to be really jarring to all the young kids whose favourite hero is now Wonder Woman. More generally, it was just the wrong time to pull out that storyline. Why not do something with Grodd? Or the Rogues?

Ah yes, the ever-present comic bro. I am working on their shallow graves as we speak.

The Young Justice thing is even worse when you find out that Donna was referenced as having joined the team in the five year break between Seasons 1 and 2. Seriously. We need her in the show, there is no damn excuse. As for the Titans, I hope to god that Donna shows up. We NEED her in that even more! The animated films are their own problem. I mean, Donna is going to be in the next Titans film... but in the mean time... Gotham by Gaslight serving as the 18th animated film that Batman will appear in for DC. That is 18.... OUT OF 20!

From what I hear, the movie itself is going to be only like the comics in name and inciting incident (Barry changing the past) and that the real alternate world will just have Themyscira having continued it's isolation from Man's world as opposed to what happened with Diana in the comic (Thank God for that one), with the villain still being Reverse Flash, and he just makes himself king of a dystopian empire (Pretty standard for a villain). But it's still rally early into the project to even get concrete details.

You know good and well we probably won't see Donna in either Young Justice or the Titans show. DC/Warner Brothers exhausts me.

Where did you hear these details?

DanFalcon In reply to Femmes-Fatales [2017-10-22 03:48:49 +0000 UTC]

I know they won't, but I can certainly dream.

I heard them on a DC Sub-Reddit. I know it isn't the most reliable, but it at least gives me the shallowest sense of hope, which is all I can hold onto at this point.

Sigh. It's rough being a Donna Troy fan. She gets no love and even when a Wonder Girl gets attention it's always Cassie. Donna has Marcia Brady's, but gets treated like Jan. The success of The New Teen Titans and the decision to reboot Wonder Woman really screwed her over Post-Crisis. It didn't help that they de-powered her for almost the entirety of the '90s.
