Description This was originally a reward for one of my Patreon patrons who wished me to share. This is a depiction of Svadri training to fight hand-to-hand with his father, Sthozdris. Learning to fight tooth and claw is important for Svadri's people and its normal for their species to do this often so they mature and develop. They really do get very rough! Almost never, though do these bouts result in any incapacitating injury. Bruises, bitten, scraped and bleeding at times, but its all part of their nature and very normal for them. The more they fight and the more they strain, the more they build back and the stronger they become.

Svadri's clan grounds are home to some very strong and dangerous hazards, from the wildlife to even a rival race of a different species of lizard men with whom they compete for resources. At the time of the beginning of the comic, the threat at hand is a faction of outcasts of Svadri's people, but in another issue, this other race may return after having been fended off. So this trait is key for the survival of Svadri's people.

This also gives a peak into Svadri's young life. Interestingly enough, Svadri suffered in his early years from a condition from weak lungs. His chest was go runny and cause him to feel a constant sensation of drowning, which hindered his growth and strength. The moisture in the jungle air didn't help so to treat him he spent much of his time cared for by his mother, Vesdi, in something she invented specifically for him--a canopy of skins shaped like the dome of an egg, with a fire in the middle, which protected him from the moisture and gave him dryer air to breath--though he still suffered from runny fluid build up in his chest. Svadri seemed doomed to remain a runt of his clan, feeble and sickly, likely to grow unattractive to females when he was ready to mate, and he was be easily smothered in a fight. Svadri's race keeps a focus on the present and not too far into the past or the future, but as their son grew showing signs of feebleness through the years, both of them became increasingly concerned for their heritage, especially Szothdris, given his other sons had met their fate in the most recent conflicts with the rival lizardmen. Svadri would be his last before he would enter into the years it would not be good for him to mate.

Svadri excelled in learning survival and crafting of weapons, and tools, (his race does not natively grasp the concept of music or dancing, so no instruments).

Sthozdris and Vesdi confronted Svadri one morning, and both were stern with him, saying, "You will be fighting with your father today."

Svadri declined, saying, "I am not fighting my father! My breath is too weak to make me a fighter."

Sthozdris insisted zealously, getting into stance. "You will face me Svadri. You will fight me so you will grow."

Svadri answered with a feral rumble, "Mmmm-I am not fighting you! It is too late for me to grow!"

Sthozdris gave Svadri tough-love and charged him--knowing Svadri would fight for his life, and he knew this would be important. He had delayed this important activity too long. Svadri indeed fought against the head butting, the clawing, the throwing, and more. He did not hold back against his father and this gladdened Sthozdris.

Day in and day out Sthozdris came and picked the usual fight with Svadri. Restling and tumbling and throwing one another hand to hand, tooth and talon, and roughening each other up. Svadris's lungs hindered him, yet more and more Sthozdris did not allow Svadri to rest. Pushed further, Svadri fought again, as though his life depended on it, going all out to resist his father's pushes and shoves.

In the years that came, Svadri's strength improved to such an extent that his lungs were stronger than his condition. It was as if he had grown out of his ailment all together. Now that he's a young adult, he has learned to hunt, and he is ready to fight any foe, and he shows promise to carry on his lineage. Sthozdris keeps the family axe ready to pass onto him when his day comes to join his in ancestors in death. He is looking forward to his death being a happy day seeing his flesh and blood lives on in his last and only son, Svadri, when he last closes his eyes.

This sounds very much like my Lir, in that they grow up learning to fight.

Great job on this, Ferroth. I can see the family resemblance and where Svadri got his drive from. One can see he learned a lot from him.

Thanks, Cambionhunter! And yep.

Fighting for survival to save what you have and what you are I think will be a reoccurring theme in the comics.

Yeah, but he got better. It took some tough love but it was good for him. Not something humans would quite do, but important for him.

Thanks ^^

Β that still sounds so backwards xD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Ferroth In reply to Veratai [2019-07-14 11:48:41 +0000 UTC]

It is backwards for humans to do so. Svadri, being nonhuman, has a different nature with different capacities...

I'd think of this as parallel to the story of Teddy Roosevelt. Of course roosevelt wasnt what Svadri is. But in Svadri's own way, it's what happened.
