This is a scene that I had noted quite a while ago. As soon as I saw an opportunity for a colourful sunset I headed there, recomposed the scene and sat there for almost an hour waiting for sunset
Nights are getting cold damnit. I shot around 50 shots of this, all with different clouds as they were moving pretty fast (windy evening). This one looked the best. I combined two ND grads (1-fstop + 3 f-stop) and used a neautral circular polarizer. Not entirely satisfied with this one, as the foreground came out too messy and a little bit ugly, especially to the left from the log. Originally I wanted to shoot this earlier this summer when there was beautiful green grass there. I also have second thoughts aboot the placement of those graduated nd filters, since the water came out a little too bright. But this is a tricky scene with too many elements which I wanted to make visible

Yea I can tell you probably did a little tampering with this one...since the water is actually brighter than the sky. But I think the effect looks good, makes the water vibrant, and the sky calm, and the juxtaposition plays with the eyes very nicely. Good job.

indeed challenging! however i think you acheived a great result! those nd filters are really tough to work with. especially when shooting a scene where the horizon is not a line across the whole image... those tall trees really break the horizon up... I kinda like them being dark and ominous!

I disagree with most of your personal critique of this shot. The choice of filters is what makes this piece stand out. I do understand the "dirty" feeling in the lower left hand corner... perhaps a slightly steeper angle (or slight crop at the bottom) would allow that to hold less weight in the shot. This does look very natural, though, and that is what really draws me into this piece. I feel as though I could walk right onto the shore of this lake...

There is much to talk about in this photograph. First of all though, after reading your description - I think you are way too concerned about everything, sometimes you've just gotta take the the photograph and let it come together for you. 99% of people will not see what you don't like. For me, this is a wonderful photograph that captures nature exactly how it is meant to be captured. The water, the way the colour reflect off the water is excellent. I am very intrigued by teh light here actually... how some of it is in silhouette and others you can make our the details. But hey, wonderful photograph.

As far as the foreground goes, it's a bit complicated, but I think [once again!!!] that the log there makes your eye move to the background. I didn't really notice the foreground until I read the description. I like it, I think it's great.

Well despite the slightly blurry foreground and the slightly bright water, this is a wonderful piece. You're lucky to live in such a beautiful place (according to this). Take more shots like this! I beg you!
