Description A little homage to one of the Planes characters who had a really interesting backstory that was overlooked. That is Rochelle. I think she was meant to be the love interest for El Chupacabra, but after reading her backstory on the Planes site, it seemed so sad it did not translate to the movie. She was a really cool character concept, one very similar to Dusty. She also started out as a worker (a Canadian bush delivery plane) who eventually wanted to try her luck as a racer. And she was successful. She did have an advantage over Dusty in that she was built as a racing plane, she just started out as a working class gal. Still, I think her story is awesome. How can you not love the idea of a woman who starts her own outback/bushland delivery service and picks up tips on medicine and mechanical fixes so she can not only heal herself but also those she delivers supplies to. Maybe the movie downplayed her story so Dusty's story would be more meaningful. I can buy that. I just missed that we never heard her story.

Anyway, I gave her a bit of her story back, in equified form. Rochelle is a French speaking Canadian who works as an outback pilot, delivering medicine and crucial supplies to Canadian horses and Anthros in the wilderness Yukon and Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Everyone thinks she is from Quebec, but she actually comes from Alberta. She's one of those lesser-known of Francophone Albertans-- French-speaking  immigrants who settled on the plains of Alberta, some even coming from Quebec (Yes, they are real! Read about them here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franco-A…

Rochelle also grew up self sufficient and loving the wilderness and the plains and mountains of Alberta-- she's a pure cowgirl-- just with a French accent . It was a natural stretch for Rochelle to gain her flyer's license and hire herself out to ferry supplies and medicine to people in the Canadian wilderness. It was a hard life but a fulfilling one, as she helped improve the lives of people in territorial Canada. Here she is sharing a moment of gratitude and thanks to a young human she delivered blood to in the nick of time.

Rochelle has earned the name "Wild Rose" in the Canadian Territories. This is because the symbol of Alberta is the wild rose that grows in the prairies.

Rochelle is completely fluent in English and French, but she also has picked up  a few useful phrases to get by in Inuit, too. And she bears the tattoos of Inuits from Nunavit as well as a Yukon bearclaw necklace. Colourwise, she is a red roan, a bay with white hairs mixed in her coat. That gives her the deep red to pink/white color like her Planes character had in the movie. Horse breedwise, she is mixed breed, so she's not seen favorably on the race circuit-- something she and Dusty share in common. She is a cross of Appaloosa blood from 19th century Nez Perce folk who immigrated to Canada from Idaho, crossed with mustang and Canadian Saddle horse blood. You can't see it here, but Rochelle has Appaloosa spots on her hindquarters as well as Appaloosa stripes on her hooves and the famous human-like eye sclera. She has brown eyes, but she sports the nanotec sunscreen in her eyes that turns them green.

She decided to become a racer, but she found out fast that, as a mare, no racing association wanted to sponsor her. Think of the horrors-- she could become a mother and then no longer be marketable! Luckily, she appealed to Canadian female entrepreneurs, and they decide to back her. They formed a club called "Powderpuff Props" made of mares who supported Rochelle. That got her race fee paid, and that is why she wears the Powder Prop logo. She is representing all Canadian female-run companies.

She can't stand El Chu at first because he is like most of the guys she encounters in her world. She gets hit on a lot since she works in a part of Canada where there are many more stallions than mares. She also resents that El Chupacabra has built his fame on starring in soap operas and writing romance novels where he is hero-- and in creating songs where he is the hero. He portrays a heroic and adventerous lifestyle, but it is all fake movie stuff. Rochelle has experienced that same adventure and danger in reality. Part of El Chu's winning of Rochelle is realizing she is a real warrior who has earned her scars the hard way. And he only wins her when he respects her for who she is.

Hi there.  I think I was the one who changed it.  Rochelle was supposed to be from Quebec, as in the movie, so they were the ones who were right.  I was the one who deviated.  I love exploring different cultures, and after traveling to Canada several times (but not enough), I discovered there are so many French speaking parts of Canada.  Quebec is the most famous, but there are large French-Canadian communities in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario (especially in Ottawa, the capital), Winnipeg and, to my big surprise Alberta!  One of my coworkers in my company (we are based in Iceland) is a French speaking Canadian from Alberta.  She mentioned that there is a huge community of French speakers in Edmonton, Alberta, and after some research I realized it was actually a really large community.  That is what inspired me to make Rochelle from Alberta rather than Quebec, a way of honoring that French Canadians come from many parts of Canada.  Alberta seemed to match her adventerous personality.  Alberta is very much a frontier type of place.  You have the cities like Edmonton and Calgary, but they both reflect a pioneer and entrepreneur type of personality.  North of Edmonton, you get into some true frontier areas, and this is also a gateway into the amazing Northwest territories and Yukon.  To me, it seemed cool a gal like Rochelle could come from a place like Alberta where she got a good education but grew up loving the frontier and spending much of her childhood in the wilderness with family...plus all the crazy natural weather and such in that part of Canada makes people very independent and also community minded.  I could see her wanting to jump into a life of adventure and flight after growing up in a family where she learned to be tough and self sufficient but also to be part of a team.  Just my view, and totally non movie canon, but the more I learn about French Canada, the more I am amazed about the culture (Btw, did you know there are two islands off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador that are actually considered a part of France?  They are called St. Pierre and Miquelon. If you travel there from Canada, you have to have a passport because you are actually entering Europe, even though it is in Canada!  Things like this are just so cool.

Oh, I get you! There were actually six different versions of Rochelle internationally, depending on there the movie was released.  So in Australia she was Australian and voiced by Jessica Marais.  In North America, she was French Canadian and voiced by Julie Dreyfuss.  You can see Rochelle and all her different livery colors here.  imgur.com/fJJcxxa

I think it was a way to honor aviation fans around the world by having a strong female character who represents someone from their region.  I could totally relate to Rochelle being from Australia, especially if she was a courier in the outback.
