Hi there. I think I was the one who changed it. Rochelle was supposed to be from Quebec, as in the movie, so they were the ones who were right. I was the one who deviated. I love exploring different cultures, and after traveling to Canada several times (but not enough), I discovered there are so many French speaking parts of Canada. Quebec is the most famous, but there are large French-Canadian communities in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario (especially in Ottawa, the capital), Winnipeg and, to my big surprise Alberta! One of my coworkers in my company (we are based in Iceland) is a French speaking Canadian from Alberta. She mentioned that there is a huge community of French speakers in Edmonton, Alberta, and after some research I realized it was actually a really large community. That is what inspired me to make Rochelle from Alberta rather than Quebec, a way of honoring that French Canadians come from many parts of Canada. Alberta seemed to match her adventerous personality. Alberta is very much a frontier type of place. You have the cities like Edmonton and Calgary, but they both reflect a pioneer and entrepreneur type of personality. North of Edmonton, you get into some true frontier areas, and this is also a gateway into the amazing Northwest territories and Yukon. To me, it seemed cool a gal like Rochelle could come from a place like Alberta where she got a good education but grew up loving the frontier and spending much of her childhood in the wilderness with family...plus all the crazy natural weather and such in that part of Canada makes people very independent and also community minded. I could see her wanting to jump into a life of adventure and flight after growing up in a family where she learned to be tough and self sufficient but also to be part of a team. Just my view, and totally non movie canon, but the more I learn about French Canada, the more I am amazed about the culture (Btw, did you know there are two islands off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador that are actually considered a part of France? They are called St. Pierre and Miquelon. If you travel there from Canada, you have to have a passport because you are actually entering Europe, even though it is in Canada! Things like this are just so cool.

Oh, I get you! There were actually six different versions of Rochelle internationally, depending on there the movie was released. So in Australia she was Australian and voiced by Jessica Marais. In North America, she was French Canadian and voiced by Julie Dreyfuss. You can see Rochelle and all her different livery colors here. imgur.com/fJJcxxa
I think it was a way to honor aviation fans around the world by having a strong female character who represents someone from their region. I could totally relate to Rochelle being from Australia, especially if she was a courier in the outback.
