I'm glad I read the info on this too, and I fully understand why you'd do this. I myself had thought about, when my cat died of cancer, having him preserved as a pelt myself, but cremation was the cheaper option for me at the time.
Beautiful preservation of the pelt, by the way.

Me: Yup!

Me: Do that yourself, it'll make me a nice skin mini carpet.

An animal is not a person. They don't even bury their own for the most part. If you don't like it, don't look?

I know I'm a little old to this post, and while I couldn't do it myself I'm kinda happy you did this. I support taxidermy and furs, so it's really nothing special for me to say this I guess, but I think it is a respectable thing to do. If my one cat looks a lot like this, but a little more greyed and scarred with age, got hit by a car and I wasn't the one to find him it'd be nice for someone to do this, it's better than letting him rot unknown. So yes, poor cat but good for his hide.
And for the people who will bitch at me for letting my cat out I have no choice, I have 7 cats that live perfectly happily in my house, but my orange boy and one other insist on going out, they urinate on the door if we don't let them out, and they have been perfectly safe for years doing this. All of them are vetted, flea treated, kept clean, and neutered. They really are a hassle to even the larger native birds though, mine killed an eastern bluebird and a peregrine falcon two years ago, though they also decimated the invasive birds and cut the rabbit population in half, I've seen more actual local sparrows and songbirds since they started roaming, starlings and European sparrows had been a huge issue. At 14 and 12 they are getting old to hunt though and now enjoy lounging about on the porch in the sun and with my dogs.Β Β

I let my cat out too. People think it's bad to do that, but it has its benefits. The cat gets to do whatever it wants, it isn't enclosed in a small area, it gets to hunt like its ancestors. My cat wouldn't go near the road, she's not stupid enough. The cars also scare her away from it. I know she wouldn't run away because of the bond we've established. Not letting your cat out because you fear it might run away is like saying "Our bond is not strong and I don't trust you" and if you fear the cat might run off for a mate, then spay/neuter it.Β

Sorry that this is a comment from years ago, but there is a solution to cats that want to go outside, but alas only if an individual has the means to pay for/make it and if they even have the space.
Catio's otherwise known as an outdoor enclosure... or a tall fence that is fenced on top to make a roof type structure. I've been trying to think myself how to do a 12x12 space with a 10 foot fenced ceiling. Should be plenty of grassy room for cats especially if you include old cat furniture, logs, and I think someone used a child's toy plastic fort and placed a litterbox inside it, and then perches where you have included a partial wall and then the cat friendly plants the cats love. Some Catio's are even fancier x:
But not good for an apartment complex or where there's no extra space to put one.

So give us the lowdown. In your experience, is there actually more than one way to skin a cat? Or is there really only one way? (sorry, I couldn't help myself.) I'm also a songbird lover. Nice pelt.

Can I ask you how you preserve the skin and tan it? I know you have to put salt on it after skinning right? and what's next?
Thanks in Advance..

OmnipotentCarrot In reply to Maquenda [2015-03-13 23:39:27 +0000 UTC]
I worked on a chipmunk pelt for my first tanning job, and it's very time-consuming. It was complicated, but possible. If you want to know the exact steps, I could get my bottle of HTF I got for Christmas later on and put every instruction on it. I was completely a noob when I first worked on the pelt I tanned. So, just let me know if you want me to find a good website for you.

I'll get my bottle of HTF that I used. It had every step on it. Keep in mind, though, that some pelts take longer to tan than others, and some require more or less time.
