I was probably 50 feet or so away. You get closer to them in passing as your moving from place to place, but you really don't want to make a habit of getting too close. Though they're accustomed to seeing people, they're still wild animals, and have been known to attack. They're really all over the place during the salmon runs, it's amazing how many of them there are.

Oh I totally understand that. I have seen a few bears where I live and I am certain that I was too close. I was riding my bike one day and a bear popped up from the ditch on my side of the road. That was startling. I swerved to the other side of the road, which was a two lane road, and started taking pics. I am pretty certain that was too close, but he didn't seem like he was stressed with me being there.

Wow, that sounds absolutely incredible! Now those are Grizzlies, aren't they? I have seen one grizzly where I live but that was from a very good distance away. Still though, great picture!

Yes, they're grizzlies. They have some black bears down in the south-east of the state, but it's mostly grizzlies. That's crazy about the bear you saw on the road! Good thing you didn't hit him, he may not have been so congenial after that.

Haha, yeah. I have been quite lucky with all the bears I have seen this year, well last year. Five bears and no problems.

I would love to see grizzlies though. They are lovely creatures. Very lovely job!
