Description Let's see if I know how to do a Preview....

*edit* No, I don't know how to do a preview T__T...so here's the original...

Okay! This is Half of the Tutorial! Steps 1-5 are, to me, the easiest. They are the Drawing and Inking Part of making a Doujin ^_^

There is a lot of information packed in here--so if you have questions, don't hesitate to ask!

One of the BIG things that I just touched upon is Printing. Size and Scale are VERY important if you plan on Printing this out. Also, the Folding Paper to make a booklet is the way your Doujin will read, putting the staples in the very middle (top) Page.

When you print it out, of course you're not going to print them in page order! Page 1 should be printed with the Last Page on the same page! Get it? Page 2 with 2nd to last page, so on and so on. The middle pages will be next to each other and that's where you staple. Also, don't forget to take into account a Nice Cover Page! ^_^

Here you can see my process, my Rough Sketches are REALLY rough, I then make changes or add more detail when penciling in the second time on my official paper, then add finishing touches when I Ink.

Hope this helps to anyone wanting to make a Doujin ^_^

Thanks, I'll try this later when I learn how to draw manga.

I need help. I already know how to format and doujin and how to draw/ink rather well my problem is transforming my ideas into panel art. I know it takes time to get the hang of it, but my mind works around anime and not manga. So I am wondering if anyone has any tips when it comes to formatting a story in to the manga format and not getting frustrated/confused.Β

try not to put too many panels on one page,Β Β  unless you think it works better that way.Β Β  Clustering it will make it harder for your reader to read the comic as well as it will feel like its rush.Β  take your time.Β  And work with the flow.

It might help to read the section about paneling in Mark Crilley's Mastering Manga, or other sources about making comics. The more important the scene, the bigger the panel, and the shape of the panels should fit the subject. A fight scene might use a lot of dramatic angles, but a couple characters talking would probably fit better in squares or rectangles. I think looking at a lot of manga would help you get used to feeling how the story flows across the page, and then try using thatwith your own story.

Have you script your ideas for each panel on each panel?

Well, if you start off with a storyboard for each panel and add in panel movement and dialogue, you'll see that it makes your story pace a little and once you feel that's enough storyboard dialogue, you stop and put what you have for those panels as page one and keep doing that. It's kind of how the movie and possibly anime industry does it but they just have a more lively result. You should check these tuts to see how to make said script: fav.me/d5s0m6g crispy-gypsy.deviantart.com/ar… fav.me/d1shct0

TheIdealMistress In reply to Overrated-Relish [2014-08-25 14:27:47 +0000 UTC]

Alright. Well another way of doing this is actually roleplaying the characters with a partner. You'll get dialogue, action and the experience all at once.

TheIdealMistress In reply to Overrated-Relish [2014-08-25 14:35:44 +0000 UTC]

Mmh-hm and if you wanna have it be dialogue you like, you can make a script with the dialogue of the characters you want to do and do a fill-in-the-blank on characters you want the other person to be and see what you like about it.

that sound good... it may be hard to find people who like the the characters I do but I'm sure they are out there

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Overrated-Relish In reply to TheIdealMistress [2014-08-25 15:24:59 +0000 UTC]

I draw a lot form different fandoms but I wanted to create a comic on Kirby or Meta Knight that is some-what based on the anime they both were in (it is a child's show so I don't think many have watched it)

Oh, OK. Well, One way to find out if anyone has is make a journal for finding a RP partner that knows the series pretty well or find ask accounts on either here or Tumblr of said characters and they're usually really nice and will help you if you got to know them better and build the relationship a little.

Xiaooyu [2013-05-11 18:14:55 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

And can't you just sketch on the paper with pencil, ink it and then erase it? That might be a little messy but less work : P

How do you NOT lose faith in your doujins? I'm planning to make one and I'm scared I will lose interest and rush it or the story becomes messy and loong...
Can I send you a storyboard? Sorry for suddenness ;_;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

frostyshark In reply to Xiaooyu [2013-05-14 05:46:48 +0000 UTC]

I'm really messy with m sketches so that's why I do that.

As for that other thing, I'm pretty committed, once I commit, I like to see all the way through. Plus, say I start a doujin/comic and I post a couple pages and a lot of people like it and comment on it that usually motivates me to finish it! ^_^

if you send a storyboard did you want me to give you pointers?

thanks so much, this tutorial was so helpful! I already do most of those things with the inking and the light-box, but I have to use a window and the huge problem with that is that I have no more light-box when the sun goes down, and the I only time I have to draw is at night -.-' you see the problem there...? thanks so much for the tip on making your own make-shift light-box with the cardboard box! that was really helpful!! now all I need is to find a sheet of glass... ooh, I could use a picture frame!

all I need now is to get my stupid scanner working and to download photoshop! yay me...

thanks :3

lol I couldn't find a sheet of glass OR a lamp, but I came up with a REALLY good alternative: You can use an oven! Just turn the oven light on (that is if yours has an option to do that...) and use the oven door as a light box! arms get pretty tired, though... and I'm scared that my drawings might end up smelling like store-bought pizza now

I think I'm going to use your tutorial because it's way easier to understand! I like how you were simple and straight with stuffs. The problem with me is I don't know how to make a good story flow. The boxes too, I'm a failure at trying to scale the boxes based on their importance and whatnot...:I I'm trying to do a chapter book, it's not complete yet (cuz it's based on a fic and it's not complete yet) Can you suggest how many pages per chapter?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

frostyshark In reply to MonochromeTenshi [2012-11-13 14:26:36 +0000 UTC]

for the panels be sure to make important stuff in bigger boxes and smaller stuff in small boxes. For example: Small panel of Character turning a dark corner, big panel of scary monster standing right there! (lol I don't know why the scary story...)

Another Example: Small panel of character grabbing another characters hands, big panel of them saying "I love you" (fangirl squees ensue)

As far as pages go, I'm no good at doing the right amount. for the Naruto one, I think I did 12, but there have been other stories I did that ended up being 19-40 pages long depending on the story.

I would say generally keep it in the 19-25 pages range.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MonochromeTenshi In reply to frostyshark [2012-11-19 13:41:03 +0000 UTC]

Sorry for the late reply but thanks for the advice! I think I get the gist of the panel thing right now. And I'm keeping it to a 5-7 each page, like you suggested! XD I am not going for dividing lines of half a cm or a cm though, just a plain line that differs between panels. Is that okay?

Oh, and it's a chapter comic, so I think your advice really helps in case I get overboard. .///.

Again, THANKS!

Lovely tutorial; very helpful <3
But sadly I don't have access to any form of scanner or Photoshop T-T

I suppose I'll just have to stick to using my camera and Gimp for now until I can get better resources.

you could always use a scanner at fed ex, if there's one near you that is. ^_^

Ah, that's a good idea. But to be honest I think I'll wait until I can afford my own scanner. At least then I can improve my manga-art until then, and there's some advantages to having my own ^^
