Description This is a photo of the geiko Miyoharu during the 2009 Kyo Odori. Geiko is the Kyoto term for a geisha. In Kyoto, there are five kagai/hanamachi, or geisha districts, and each of them has at least one annual dance recital. The Kyo Odori is held every April by the Miyagawacho geisha district, the second largest in Kyoto and my personal favorite.

This was a dance performed by relatively young geiko. Miyoharu for instance had only debuted in the February of that year, although others like Komomo and Toshihana had been geiko for more than five. The dance had a fairly simple theme of young maidens dancing in a field of na-no-hana flowers (for a more detailed explanation of na-no-hana flowers, go here [link] ). Older geiko tend to get the more complicated dance numbers. The most senior geiko, Fumicho, had a solo in which she depicted an Uji boatwoman who came ashore with a beautiful and sad tale of romance.

I'm loading this picture as part of the group "Flickr Members for Japan" [link] . We're loading pictures with the links to Japan Relief donation sites from various countries. I took most of my favorite pictures when I was living close to Kyoto, a place that is very dear to my heart, so I thought I would post several of the pictures I had taken of Kyoto's geisha districts. I have to wonder if any of the women there have family from Northern Japan.

wonderful photo!
How did you get tickets for kyo odori? Can you just go to the theatre and buy tickets? When I went to Gion odori my host family helped me get tickets but now I'm in a dorm. XD

I always just showed up the day of and bought a ticket. I always went by myself, so it wasn't hard for them to squeeze me into a spare seat. The only one that I had any difficulty with was the Miyako Odori, where I had to reserve a ticket for the next week. Do you have a dorm mother? If you do, she might be able to help you like your host family .
