Description I went to the Jidai Matsuri in Kyoto, Japan. The Jidai Matsuri is most often translated into "Festival of the Ages" and is the annual parade that Kyoto holds on October 22nd where the clothing styles of Japan during Kyoto's time as capital are displayed. Numerous historical and fictional characters are a displayed as well, like Tomoe Gozen, a female samurai that was written of in the "Heike Monogatari".

Tomoe stole my breath away. She was really magnificent. She was the only woman in the parade that was in armor and riding a horse. She is being played by Katsuma, a geiko from Kamishichiken.

Ah, yes. Magnificient certainly is the proper word - what poise, what an aura she exudes!

Tomoe Gozen was my favorite at the Matsuri, she seemed so powerful and regal.Β

The photo certainly conveys that. I'm really happy I stumbled across your photos! I miss Japan, but they make me stop and just consider them, enjoy them, and in a way join you in your visit, or see into the window you open by your photos.
Tomoe Gozen is on another note one of my many favourites among characters in Japanese history/mythylogy. It is lovely to see her portrayed like this.

Would you feel comfortable submitting this image into the Battle Ready Womyn group? [link] Were a group dedicated to realistically armoured women warriors and respectful interpretations of them and feel this artwork fits group qualifications. Hope you chose to contribute! (This would be best submitted into the Photography folder).

I've read Tomoe Gozen's story, recounted in another book "Samurai Women" Stephen Turnbull, and it is an interesting story. I have Heike Monogatari, but its so long that I have yet to finish it. Anyway this is a really nice pic, the costumes, weapons, and armor looks very nice and authentic!

I've been wanting to read the Heike Monogatari for a while now, but I'm still trying to get through the Tale of Genji. I have so many epics on my to-read list, but I don't know when I'll ever make the time for them.

The costumes at the Jidai Matsuri are always really amazing, but I definitely think Tomoe Gozen's was the best .

The Jidai Matsuri was great, I really loved it. It's definitely worth seeing, so if you ever plan a trip to Kyoto, you might want to arrange it so that you can see it. Tomoe Gozen is a really interesting figure, I've had a lot of fun learning about her .

Great. ^_^ Yeah, I'd really like to see that, maybe one day I will be able too. ^_^

Yeah she's a really interesting person! Very brave. ^_^ Of course no one's really sure if she existed, but I like to think she did.

When she sits that straight, I can somehow feel her strength and bravery.

I wasn't sure or not, so thank you! She stole my breath away during the parade. I can't imagine what it would have been like to meet the real Tomoe Gozen. I'd probably faint.

She was an extremely powerful woman. Not the type to just sit back at home and do the cooking!

Lucky! I was busy then, so I couldn't go. Jidai Matsuri was something I had to go to, though, so I made the time. If you're ever in Japan on Oct 22, then you need to go see it .

So many games and shows have used her character. She's one of the famous women of Japanese history, so a bunch of creators use her for inspiration.

Nice !.. Is is based of a true story?? ?

Fuyou-hime In reply to s-lilje [2008-10-22 17:44:56 +0000 UTC]

It's debated whether or not Tomoe is real or not, with most people leaning towards fiction. Heike Monogatari, though, is based on the real life battle between the Taira and Minamoto clans.
