Gorgeous, I love the sleek outline, and the voluptuous pillowy form, not to mention the contrast between the rosey colored mid section and the paler outer thighs.Β  A very modernized Venus of Willendorf.Β  Asking one who sculpts wood, are these things such as color and grain pattern, something that you can predict before getting into the material?Β  Also about, the crack at the bottom right, was that something already in the material or occurred later.Β  To my teachings, wood exhibits the expansion and constrictions as it were alive.

Thanks, my friend!
I actually can predict quite a lot of the pattern and even of cracking by the time.
The grains you can see from the outside roughly and you can somewhat predict as well the patterns of branches inside the wood. Even though there are always surprises.
With regard to the cracks you learn that they mostly go through the largest volume, as there the tension due to the shrinkage process is most prominent. In this case I split the log in half, because, when leaving the centre in the piece the shrinkage is much strnger and larger cracks will occur. I do this often, if I want to avoid cracking. Neverthess, in this case you lose the complete closed roundness of the rings.
So, it really is a living thing!
Stay well and keep sculpting!
Greetings to Indiana!

hadasaugh-sculpt [2014-02-15 15:10:46 +0000 UTC]

beautiful workmanship and perspective.Β  I looked closer at the wood and it appears that you carved it with either really sharp tools to get that chipped away texture...or (like I do) you sanded it first and then added the texture.Β  I don't envy you using a hard wood like that...but the end result is smashing!

gecko-online In reply to hadasaugh-sculpt [2014-02-15 15:21:16 +0000 UTC]

thanks, hadasaugh, for the comment and compliment. it was a sharp chisel. Actually I like working in the hard woods. Finishing this way needs a bit of endurance, as I do not use mallet, only the chisel driven by hand, as this does not leave hammering marks in the facets. But sharpening tools from time to time helps!Β
