Description This is an older piece, but it's the very first one that I colored using the digital chiaroscuro technique that has become my favorite method.

Sailors don't like dandified, white-glove-wearing fops, by the way, so if you are one, do yourself a favor and stay out of their hang-outs.

This is wonderful work. I just wish you had uploaded it a bit larger so the full view would show the intricate detail you put into the drawing and coloring. Great coloring style - it really gives the piece some great ambiance and a sense of atmosphere.

Is it a bit small? I'll take a look and maybe put up a larger version. Glad you enjoyed it.

Could you please make this into a wallpaper? That would be awesome. I love all the characters in this scene.

This reminds me of a good song, but I can't think of the title or artist, It's got sailors and one with a microphone for a hand in the music video!

Nifty lighting and coloring--and I really like the pencil texture you can see especially in the table and the guy closest to the camera. Nice!

Dag Nabbit, you made me Google "digital chiaroscuro technique"!

And....... Did it get you any results?

Yes and a bit of an art history lesson. Apparently my drawing style is from the dark ages.

Oh, but some of the best things came out of the dark ages.......like indentured servitude.........the plague..........

What a coincidence! I just watched "The Seventh Seal" the other night. That Ingmar Bergman was a rather cheeky fellow... Well, in a gloomy black death, festering sore - futility of life kind of a way.

Though I know the chiaroscuro technique I wonder how you incorporate it to your pictures. Could you explain a little bit how you face it?

I work lighter colors into a dark base, using several different brush modes to achieve the look I want. And, of course, it's always over either a pencil drawing or a digital drawing. If I said any more, I'd be giving away all my secrets though!

Thanks a lot for the clues, I never thought on working over a dark base, tending to dark lighter colors Noted!

A great line to go with a great piece.

I bet even the old guys could beat him up.

I really, really love this piece! That poor fellow looks mildly terrified. The coloring on this is absolutely beautiful! And all of the characters are very unique, and seem full of personality.

He probably needs to change his pantaloons.........OK, I really just wanted to say pantaloons! If this piece never happened, or if I couldn't get it to work out, my style might be totally different today. It really was the genesis of my technique, so I'm very glad that you like it!

That guy looks very much like he regrets opening that door!
I love the lighting and mood in this, and that's certainly a group of characters I doubt I'd want to run into in a dark alley <_<;
