Brillant Billionaire inventor, Ted Kord inherited a wooden box with a magical golden scarab contained inside from his mentor Dan Garrett when he died. Dan, was secretly the super hero Blue Scarab for many years, and the scarab talisman holds great power. Ted was able to unlock it, and the power within grafted onto him. The scarab talisman houses the Egyptian god of vengence Konshu, who communes with the holder of the scarab. When Ted discovered his friend and mentor's past double life as a Superhero, Ted wanted nothing more than to honor him by donning the scarab, a costume of his own, and following in his friend's footsteps. Unlike Dan Garrett though, Ted Kord has the vast financial resources to equip himself with a flying Moon Beetle vessel, continue to be trained by the best fighters - marksmen - and spies, a strobe gun to blind opponents, and a near bulletproof kevlar woven super suit. Over time, the extended exsposure to the power of the scarab amulet, the unwavering presence of the deity Konshu and the voices of the avenged souls within it, have started to drive Ted insane. He realizes he'll one day have to hang up the cape and put away the amulet for good, but for now he is too busy enjoying kicking ass and taking names as the MOON BEETLE.
